The title

Was the title because of the voice it took to change laws or because of the force feeding?

reply

My interpretation of it is societies view (at the time) that women were delicate, angelic creatures but these women were also "iron jawed" because they were strong enough to stand up and speak for all of womankind for the right to vote.

It's mentioned in the movie (by Mabel Vernon, played by Brooke Smith) that Massachusetts Representative Joseph Walsh gave them that name when he argued that they would not yield to "the nagging of iron-jawed angels."

..Ya that doesn't exactly answer where the term iron jawed came from hence the question and the examples in it..But thanks anyways

reply

YES it does. The term came from a 1910-era Congressman.

Presumably "iron jawed" was a common phrase from the period, just like victrolas and vamps and horseless carriages.
