Very bad movie

I have to say, the movie is goodhearted, i do like that, but only being goodhearted and leftwing intellectual is not enough to make anyone think different, that does not already have these opinions.
The movie has characters, which do not develop in any direction. The only move is the son hugging the father.
There is no discussion of euthanasia.
There is no discussion of drug abuse or drugaddiction.
There is no discussion about what it is, that the son, the prince of the barbarians, does wrong.
There is so much intellectual surfacetalking that one thinks there is also a reflection about all those ideas. There is not!
I especially love the line: "I need heroin" and then everyone kind of grabbing in their pockets as if looking for a ball pen. "I wanna kill your son" - "Well, here are the keys, have fun!"
Sorry, not enoug.

You should probably see it as a social commentary on life in Quebec. Lately, I've been getting a feeling that there's been a hand carefully and thoughtfully steering things in a certain direction in that province.

i agree that this movie was pretty bad - it didnt really communicate anything to me. The characters spend a lot of time discussiong their sexual lives / sexual jokes which i didnt see the funny side of?? maybe that is the montreal sense of humour?
i think the film TIES to say something about the current state of history but ends up saying not much original except reminding us that hsitory was brutal.

The movie disapponted me too. Perhaps I should've watched in 2003-2004, when it was considered great? But I have just watched in (in 2015) and it seems so shallow. There are definitely attempts of social and historical commentary, but done so weakly. Dialogs are this movie's biggest problem, definitely.
And I still haven't figured out the significance of the title...

Overrated movie. Flat drama with flat characters and too much political preaching.

I think you summed it up right there. All of the political discussions are just very broad generalized mentions of political ideologies. They talk about the different politics they supported at one time in their lives - but they don't actually talk about the ideologies themselves. I don't understand how people refer to this movie as a movie regarding politics. It's not !

It's a movie about a guy on his death bed who has friends visit him and a son who brings him heroin. Sure, there's a little more to it, but not much more.

There's really no true great moments or even any scenes which even stood out much. I can't believe it won the Oscar for Best Foreign Film.

Give me a break, the death scene was one of the most moving scenes I've ever seen.
