The Swayzee character

Was Patrick Swayzee playing the same character in both movies, in which case Havana Nights is a prequel? Or was he simply another dance instructor in Havana Nights?

I was just thinking the same thing, but cant seem to figure it out myself.....i thought it was a sequel and that would make the most sense except for how old he is in this one....it looks like the same period as the first film...which is why i threw out the prequel idea cause he'd be YOUNGER in a prequel.....and if he ended up with the girl in the original i doubt hed just run off to cuba right after that.....so maybe its a sequel that takes place like 10 yrs after the original?........it just stinks cause i love that swayze in it, but it bugs me that we dont know how he fits in.....it shouldnt even be a "Dirty Dancing" movie.....just another movie called just "Havana nights"....that also happens to have swayze in it...where we just call it an homage (or be more honest and call it a rip off) and be done with it.......its too much to wrap my brain around....and its just a Dirty Dancing movie.......or is it??.........

I think im done.....

Check, please

(Sigh)...anyone else wanna take a stab at it?

This story is set in 1958 and the original film was set in 1963. Johnny could've been teaching dancing in Cuba in the 50s and then moved back to the US. I can't remember how long he was supposed to have been working at the Kellerman's.

If that's the case, then they should have either made Patrick look younger (seeing as he'd be playing a younger Johnny), or they should have cast a Swayze lookalike.

Your opinion of me doesn't define who I am.

If Dirty Dancing is set in the 60s, then the political situation of that time would not have allowed Swayze to just up and go to Cuba after the period of the movie, so he must have been there pre-1959, if he is the same character.

I think it's a prequel- and he's the same character- were just supposed to suspend disbelief about the fact he looks older!
:O

I don't think so. I think he was mainly a cameo. It was more for the affect that yes, this is a dirty dancing movie, look we have Patrick Swayzee. Since there is no way they can claim he is playing the same character because of the age difference. Although I would think just having him play a part would have been important to the people making the movie.

I'm just sad at how wasted he looked in the movie..since he had pancreatic cancer.

reply

He didn't get diagnosed with cancer until 5 years after this movie. He was just older here.

Patrick was VERY sick in this movie. Kept his illness secret for years. I guess this movie was his last hurrah. Except for Beast.

I was wondering about that, when I watched some of it this past Sunday night. :(
