Personally i think it is way better than the original and it has latin fever to it too. I saw the first one and hated it, but like the second. Its your opinion, but I think Havana Nights is really good.

reply

I like both movies. They are good in different ways. The first one is a classic. Neither storyline is particularly inventive and none of the actors in either really stand out as doing a spectacular job, but there's something about the first one, a magic that makes a lot of people fall in love with it. The second one didn't have that magic, but it was still a good movie.

I'm a dancer and I can say quite clearly the each movie is very different, with different styles of dancing in it. Personally I liked the second one better cos I'm more of a latin boy. You shouldn't just come out with a sweeping statement like that though. Everyone should have their own opinion instead of being beaten over the head with something like that.

Yeah, when I sat down to watch it, I thought i was gonna hate it but then i stopped comparing it! If you compare it to the original, it won't stand up to it but think of it as a movie on it's own and its actually really good with some groovy music.

I liked it!

didn't like it, but then again I hate dance movies. Came to a surprise that I didn't hate the first one, I didn't really love it but it goes as far as a decent movie for me.

The two movies shouldn't be compared, they were different i every way...first of all, i agree with emauella, the first one was really overestimated, it's not that incredible..the music was totally different, the dance style also..
Havana nights was very cute, even though the actors could have acted better(this is my only complaint, i'm sure they just did't give it all)..other than that,i ejoyed every second of the music and the dance was incredible. The idea was pretty original, regarding the revolution, and the ending wasn't a cliche ..so....a very very nice movie which i watched many many times!!and i'm still gonna do that

reply

Take a pill. The first one is overrated and talked up way to much. Even though the 2nd isnt gr8 its ok to watch if there is nothing else to do. Also like they made a dance teacher role to tie the 2 together. Wont live up to the dance movies of today but cant help but think if was made 15 years ago it could have also been a classic.

Watch and enjoy

This is definitely a coming of age/falling in love story in the same vein as DD and each story deals with the issue of privilege and poverty with a cash poor male lead and a monied female lead but, after that, these two stories part company. DD was a gritty flick with an abortion sub-plot, that to me, stripped the original of a little bit of the fun element. While the Cuban Revolution in Havana Nights was also very serious subject matter, Havana Nights centered less on the revolution and focused more on the young love aspect, which allowed the material to remain lighter. The dancing in DD and Havana Nights were also very different genres. While the club house scene in DD definitely had a salsa element, the majority of the dancing that Johnny and Baby do together is ballroom dancing. Ballroom is very, very structured. Believe it or not, the latin dances (like the Mambo,) are extremely technical. The dancing for Havana Nights focused mainly in on Afro-Cuban dancing, which is more physical, more spontaneous, less inhibited and less technical. The dance routine that Katey and Javier work out together for the competition at The Palace was meant to be a combination between Javier's freer Afro-Cuban style and the more technical ballroom dancing that Katey had been brought up doing. I'm sorry that you didn't like Havana Nights. I hope that your next movie viewing experience is more positive. :)

I love both films. I love the whole latin scene.
All the actors must have been under enormous pressure to even try to pull it off. Well done guys.

I wouldn't say it was an insult to the first one though, lets face it most sequals to films are never as good as the first one.
To be honest if anything you have insulted the actors by basically saying that they haven't done a good job.
Not much really changed in the first one and the second one; they both had a love triangle, in both the girl was from another town/country, they both had the whole no staff/guest relationships etc...

I actually really liked Havana Nights. I'd say I still probably prefer the original, but this was a very good sequel considering most just suck. I think they changed up the storyline enough, even though it is still similar to the first in ways. I think Katey's a lot like Baby too, except more exaggerated as the good girl. But I don't think Javier is really anything like Johnny unless you compare them both being poor and "off limits". I also liked how they changed it so that it was the mother who had the bigger problem to the relationship. I thought it was a little weird how Katey would just kiss Javier in public though (though I can see it if she wanted to make a point that she didn't care that he was Cuban). But considering how she barely wanted Javier to touch her for a long time, I thought it was odd that she would just kiss him after their dance (although I did love it).

And I thought there were a lot of nods to the original in the movie. Most people probably noticed them but like when Javier, Katey and her sister were all 3 dancing and when Katey's mom said something like "No doubt you get it from me" (even though it did make sense since she was a dancer, I still bet it was thrown in there as a nod to the original). There were more than that, but no use listing them all.

Anyway I don't think this is insulting to the original. The story is different enough and the dancing is completely different. Overall I really liked it.

im sorry but ive heard all of your views and even watched the movie again

ITS STILL CRAP im sorry but its propberly the worst movie ive seen and shouldnt be classes in any league of dancing movies as the dance in it is what i child could do.

if, for example, these words reach you. you can rip out my vocal cords and throw them away

Still it's your personal opinion, right? :-)
As for me if i think something is "crap" this wouldn't make me go to the corresponding thread and announce the object of discussion as the "worst movie". I may be wrong, it's just how i feel about it.

Just forget the comments.
The movie sucked and I agree with you it was an insult.
I cannot believe that some guys are claiming to be dancers and liked the movie. These "dancers" could not even make out that this dance in this film was equal to the action in Charlies Angels.

The dance scenes were all edited, i dont think any of the dancers even danced for more than 30 seconds continously. if they did they never showed a frame for more than 30seconds.
It was just like a MTV Music video style shooting.
People just fail to notice such things.
just like the action in Charlies angels. i still remember she just moves her leg and the frame changes and you see her leg on his throat. They just do an "effect" which makes us feel she kicked him so fast. But she actually moves her leg. then someone lifts her leg up and places it on villians throat and then a very good video editor puts those two scenes together and makes it appear like a good kick.

The same goes for this movie.
I can see the clearly that none of the dance scenes were "continous". they were always changing frames. Most of these so called "dancers" are too ignorant to know that they do this not to show us the dance from different angles. but to cut out a few seconds of the "movement" so to make the dance seem really fast.
They even do it to remove clumsy scenes.

Watch the dance scenes in the original and this stupid movie.
you will see that in the original they were dancing continously(or rather the camera never "changed frames" or "changed angles") for more than 3-4 minutes.
I think you should watch it again :-P just to see this for yourself.

I can easily recognize it cause I see these music videos in my country where the only fat chicks make it on the videos cause they are the ones with the big boobs. And they move slower than cows. So they do a lot of heavy editing to make them look like they are doing some sexy and fast dancing.
but these chicks get expose when they become too famous and they are invited to dance live on stage.
But Nowadays even on stage especially for film actresses, the dances that are live are never broadcast from 1 camera and there is always a delay for live shows. So they do real cool "live" editing and then broadcast it.

So this movie never had any real dance for everybodys information.

I agree with you. I did not watch he first D/D and this one happened to be on TV the other day so I watched it. I could not envision anyone other than a preteen girl finding this movie watchable. Terrible acting, plot, storyline, and no twists or anything unexpected. It was just a terrible film. I was surprised not to see more people trashing it. It was a well deserved box office disaster.

"The plot is loosely based on the life story of producer JoAnn Fregalette Jansen, who moved to Cuba with her family in 1958. Thus, the "Based on True Events" title."

That is all.

I agree this movie was absolutely horrible and spit int he face of the original and for all you idiots saying you are dancers and this was great you are lying. Also patrick swayzes mother was a professional dancer his whole life and he was taught dancing professionally so I would say your a bit ignorant in saying it wasn't legit. Also the original was and is classic this only used the dirty dancing name to bring in people to watch it because it is nothing like the original and its sucky
