Really disappointed ***SPOILERS***

From all the positive reviews, I expected this to be a smart, well-written comedy with deep, believable characters. Instead I found cliched writing and one-dimensional characters. The slacker who wants to flee city life and enjoy nature... the flaming gay guy who surrounds himself with gawking women... the jilted ex-lover who jealously stalks the protagonist, waiting to expose his secret... the gladhanding politician who can't keep it in his pants... the materialistic wife who can't stand her unambitious husband?

I've seen all these characters in other movies, and portrayed better. In particular the whole Trudy and Sandy thing felt like it was ripped from Annette Bening and Peter Gallagher in American Beauty. Miranda Otto did a good job, but her character was so unbelievable. Wouldn't she think to ask just ONCE how this guy dropped out of the sky into her backyard? It's like she made up the backstory about him being a professor, then forgets to wonder why he's really there!

Fantasy-comedy though it may be, nothing excuses wildly unbelievable premises and cliched characters in my book. Was anyone else disappointed?

Last movies seen:
Danny Deckchair 4/10
Death Race 2000 3/10
Unknown 7/10

I agree. I thought this was going to be a really funny movie, but instead it was a cliche chick-flick

Not really regarding this movie (which I found very sweet, but a bit dull once Danny got back on the ground after his initial wild baloon-ride).. but frey78, how can you only give Death Race 2000 a rating of 3/10?? It's a classic funride, and one of David Carradine's best roles ever (only beaten by Kill Bill perhaps).. not to mention the fun part by a cocky Sylvester Stallone.. and all the nice gore and bodycount.. awesomeness compressed. Anybody should give it at least 5/10.

Question, are you Australian? (lemme guess, you didn't find Kenny and the castle to be 'good' movies?)

reply

I agree w/ you OP.

Henceforth, you shall be known as Darth... Vader.

Just saw it on IFC. I liked it but I thought it didn't really make sense for the reporter to do the news story on Danny yet not show his picture.I was rooting for Danny & Glenda to run off right before the media descended on the town without him being found out.

reach out and grab Life before Death grabs you!

They should have shown a bad photo with wacky hair, a beard, and sun glasses.

In any case, it is a fun film that isn't really meant to be all that serious.

I thought it was a wonderful, quirky, little film. No movie is ever really 100% perfect, so I see no need to nitpick about the occasional small flaws that are going to be found. Having seen hundreds upon hundreds of films, I have yet to see one where I didn't spot at least one untrue, unbelievable or confusing moment, either in the script or in the filming.
