Well, for me, (to a non-russian who speaks fluently russian) it was all so enjoyable. This atmosphere, storyline, characters and all the tiny details (slang, accents, styles, timeline reality etc.) - everything was so perfect. First I saw it in Dublin, with my russian mates - it was kind of a link to home. I still watch it from time to time.
Best TV-series so far (from modern Russian TV).

Btw, Olga, you should phrase your question better. This way it looks more like a monologue...

Wbr,
Jannes

Jannes1979- i guess it was sort of like a monologue...P.S. i think i've seen Brigada way too many times....P.P.S. looking forward to seeing to episone of it that they changed...because when three of them were killed the makers of the film made a mistake and it's not really clear why Max killed them....(thou we all know that it was that evil ex police guy)

I am russian but I live in America and I saw it a while back and I was blown away. Rarely do we see such great filmmmaking. All the characters are well developed and you feel for them. Though it is long it is worth it. I read the books and the sequels which are pretty interesting if you are a fan of the miniseries. They should make more American miniseries or films like this.

I am watching Brigada now (I have a few more episodes to go) and really love it. I am trying to learn Russian but speak very little. Even though the subtitles are horrible, I am enjoying the story very much.

Does this movie come from a book? Is it translated? Who is the author?

Also, does anyone have any suggestions for other Russian series that are good? Now that I have seen one, I would love to watch more.

reply

Will they make more (ofcourse not but I am just hoping)? The ending leaves space for a new season... Why didn't Sasha go with Olja?

reply

im russian myself and it kicks ass. what they guy above me said that finally there is a good film made in russia, you went to america perhaps too early. most russian movies are brilliant, we dont have an al pacino but the stories are just amazing, probably because i still miss the russian way of life even if im for 12 years in germany.

i dont think there will be a next part of the movie because belij is the only one who can still play and he wants too much money. also it will suck, no new actor could compete. the friendship they had is the best and you cannot fake it.

reply

The guys who made the movie said that there will be no continuation and that the shot you hear at the end of the last episode is the one killing Sasha Bely. So from their words the ending doesn't leave any space for a new season. However Brigada is continued in the book (by Aleksandr Belov), so there are steady rumors that there is going to be Brigada-2 with Bezrukov starring.

It depends on what kind of series do you like and want.. For example if you want cop series try ULYICI RAZBITIH FONAREY; MENTI; TAYNI SLEDSTVIYA. If you want historical try GIBELY IMPERII; PO TU STORONU VOLKOV (actually mistical); If you liked Brigada you definetley HAVE to watch Bumer (Bimmer)..you'll like it.

There is a whole bunch of books. The basic version from 4 books which reflects the movie, the "full" version from 8 books (4 more books for skipped years), and the "extended" version from 12 books. I think 4 books will be enough, but you should read the book #6 (1987-1989), amazing.

reply

wow I must be the only one who didnt find the series so marvelous. Conisdering how much of Russian TV I've watched I couldnt help but compare the genre and acting to shows like the Sopranos and Countess of Monsoreau (Grafinya de Monsoro) and how natural Aleksandr Domogarov acting is compared to that of Bezrukov. The action itself had a very "series" feel to it and so did the dialogue and that's fine when you're watching a comedy series or a soap drama but Brigada didnt have a dark visceral flow to it which is what any crime drama associated with Russian underworld really needs.

Shows like Brigada and Drongo are amongst the best in Russia, but they still lack originallity in plot and shock value to keep me interested.

reply

UnmeanteD, you aint russian, simple as that, there is no way you can even UNDERSTAND that movie if you aint russian or if you dont like/know our way of life. i bet you didnt even understand the dialoges, perhaps you dont even understand the friendship they have. the acting wasnt amazing, i said that, we dont have as great actors as america does, we dont have the money to make movies like matrix.

and how come there was a sound of a gun at the end of the movie? belij calls olga and goes into the car and leaves. maybe ive watched it too long ago, but i dont remember anything like a shot.

and belij wants too much cash for a second part. others are dead, nobody will see his new friends, nobody will like them

reply

Yes I'm not Russian, I'm actually Georgian (people who know a thing or two about friendship :) ) but I speak the Russian language perfectly. I dont think i wanted to give an impression that this movie was lacking high budget explosions or CGI, because I honestly don't care for that. All the plot, the so called strong friendship, the memories of being young and in love were solely built and delivered through acting which should have been better considering the series has more time than a full length film to get deep with the characters.

I didnt buy them when they were tough and didn't buy them when they were dramatic (various scenes in the hospital) or even romantic.

I just wanted to voice my opinion on a series which made a good effort in slowly pushing Russian drama to the hights it yet has to achieve.

reply

yes i agree with insy... you have to be russian or at LEAST understand it to understand the movie. But still i loved the movie. I Think it was fantastic. And Sergei Bezrukov did an excellen t job in acting his role. It has a meaning to it... its not like some other american movies.

reply

Well, if you are estonian like me you also understand russian life-style and people, especially if you have neighbors and friends in russia and estonia, so definitely a worth watching series and educational also, cause there is something to learn from these guys for every man and it is courage that what makes a man.

reply

I am not russian, i am am ukrainian, and to tell the truth i hate russian movies, but i do speak russian and i think that this is not only the best russian movie, but the best movie period, it is amazing!!!

reply

Even though I'm not a Russian, I really understand the movie and what it means. Beliy was right when he decided to revenge instead of sitting in the Duma. Because they were brothers. This simple word means a lot for this kind of people. Maskim Karel'skiy - mug. He could've been killed by Chechens in 1991 if he hadn't joined Beliy, and is that how he answer?

reply

You don`t need to be rushian to understand the movie. I`m bulgarian and i understood it perfectly (and liked it very much). It looked awfull familiar to me.

reply

yes, at first i thought i missed it too, but then he stops a car, and the screen goes black and then u hear a faint gun shot... i was confused cause there are supposed to be 2...

reply

"we dont have the money to make movies like matrix."

Daywatch and Nightwatch?

reply

Well...they werent bad guys at 1st, destiny choose them. Belov didnt want to this in the 1st place. And his friends died they were like brotehrs to him, and he wasnt bad. Besides the way they died no matter who they were it was still painful to watch.

And personally I LOVE mafia, thats why I watched this movie, because someone told me it was about mafia. lol

I really hate the end...why did they have to die? :(

ciao

reply

and by the way OlgaR, its just that throughout the series you "get to know" them, and well they didn't want to be bad at first either, but as someone else in this discusion said, it was their destiny, and also the way they show that belov remembers them and stuff i don't know, its just soooo sad! I am now reading the 3d book, and belov says, "if we survive tomorrow we will live one hundred years" and it just made me start crying cause i knoe they will die... and the way they die... it would be less sad if they died in a shootout, then betrayed... and yes although i do pity max a bit... what he did was wrong, VERY wrong...

reply

u cant say they were bad people just cause they killed others if they regret it then they werent bad and kosmos did regret it and i cryed at the end man its so sad I cry every time i watch the ending...and its my fav movie too btw

ciao

reply

Yes, i cry too, every single time i watch it... at the part where they die and at the end... and i wonder... what is it like to loose EVERYTHING, his parents, his "brothers", his "job" and lifestyle and his wife and son...
