How did the kid know that Sean was dead? (SPOILERS)

If we are to believe that the kid digs up the letters that Anna wrote to Sean and from here, he falls in love with Anna and pretends to be her dead husband --- how does the kid find out that Sean was in fact dead? It certainly wouldn't have been included in the love letters because if Anna had written a letter to her dead husband then how would Clara have ended up with it?
