Most cruel twist

How could Anna love Sean (dead husband) that much when he did not love her at all? Yeah, I know he cheated and hid it well and she was totally oblivious to that. But one can only love someone devotedly like that if the other returns the love equally. Sean could not act so well while marrying to Anna but was so much in love with Clara. (He did not even read Anna's letters and gave them unopened to Clara - what an ayhole!)

Such a devastating twist near the end of the movie (when Clara revealed the affair to young Sean). I think it was so cruel for the audience. They thought they were watching an everlasting love between a husband and wife. A love that still exists long after one has died. But then they realized Sean was such a low-life cheat. All Ana's love was just a total waste of devotion. She wasted her life for him.

She wasted her life for him.

I think that is why she just couldn't let it go, even after his death, it haunted her making her some sort of specter.

I don't think she was aware of the secret affair between her husband and Clara at all. She couldn't let go because she loved him so much. And because of that I think the story is a bit absurd.

Anna would have flashbacks those tender moments with late husband. But he had been constantly cheating her. They would not have many of those moments for her to reminisce. Therefore she would have forgotten about him soon after he'd been dead.

Or, like in the movie, somehow she still loved him. And it was so cruel for us to watch her wasting her love and her life for cheating Sean.

Sean cheated Anna deliberately, cheated the young Sean unintentionally. And I can envision Sean raising his middle finger at us for getting sentimental before Clara revealed that devastating truth. (😂)

I don't understand why you think it's absurd. Men can and do lie to their wives without breaking a sweat. Women can and do continue to love their husbands even after they get fcked over.

"What race are you? If you don't tell me I'll just...assume the worst."

When a man cheats his wife, and deeply in love with the third woman like Sean did, he can hide his affair, he can lie to his wife, but he cannot show his loving connection to his wife. They can go about daily routines as husband and wife (including sex). But he's like absent all the time. That why I just wonder how she would still miss him so much after he's been dead for a long time. Of course, that is just my thought. Who knows Anna is different?

How would you know this though? Many married couples have gone 10 or 15 years where a spouse is completely blindsided by the others infidelity. Then there are times where the spouse has an idea or gut feeling about the other being unfaithful, but not all the time. It doesn't take much to pretend and coast through a relationship.

10 years is a very long time to be attached to someone, but it is possible. There are people who lose a loved one and remain single for the rest of their life because they simply can't let go. Some people die of a broken heart. Everyone deals with grief in different ways. I think Anna loved him, but I don't believe she was so deeply in love as time went on UNTIL young sean showed up and she fell in love again, which is why she sought out Clifford to tell him to go away because she couldn't bring herself to do it, only to have him ripped away a second time. Pretty depressing.

why couldn't she love him deeply- even if he was a cheater?

do we only love people if they meet our expectation? she loved him and will love him all her life- we are not perfect and we love people regardless of their imperfections

maybe she did love him and he loved her- because he cheated doesn't make the love they shared and the life they lived wasted
