I live in Australia and we get it on ABC. The narrator said it was the "series final" ???? help?

I think it's due to the confusing terminology. What Americans refer to as a "season" is called a "series" by the Brits (I don't know how Australia falls on this, but here in Canada, we go by the American convention.)
So Synchronicity was the final epsiode of the third season (or series), but probably not the final episode in the show's overall life. A fourth season has apparently been comissioned and will apparently adapt The Torment of Others (the 4th book in the book series) as part of it.
Thats a big relief...thought it was ending just as soon as i began to appreciate it.
Oh and at the risk of sounding a dope, who is the author responsible for the novels? Id be very interested to read them.....

The author is Val McDermid.
The four books in the series are, in order:
The Mermaids Singing
The Wire in the Blood
The Last Temptation
The Torment of Others
I recommend reading them in that order, to get the full effect, and so certain key events aren't spoiled.
