how can they recommission sh**e like wild at heart and cancel this? astounding

As an American fan of this show I hope you Brits make enough of a stink to have ITV or someone else pick this show back up.

I shudder to think what the announced American version will be like!

That is unless they bring back Robson Green and keep its grim, realistic premise going.

*please note I have yet to see Prayer to the Bone

It is what it is.

I recenlty bought the DVD series for an 80's detective show called "Bergerac" well I got quite a surprise when I realised who one of the younger detectives was ( he was a bit of a goofy character actually ) it was none other than Michael !!

k999m, I have to politely disagree. You can't call Tony a killer just because he killed Michael as an act of self-defense. I think it's most likely that in the WITB universe Tony lands on his feet. There's no reason to think the show couldn't have continued, as Tony's actions are justifiable. I like to think no charges would even be filed.

Perhaps like one of my other favorite shows, Jonathan Creek, the show can continue in the form of the occasional 2-hour special. The prospect of an American show makes me cringe, but not as much as the idea of an American version of Jonathan Creek with Whoopi Goldberg :)

I believe ITV had it before the BBC, so no hope there.

Did the alleged last season even run in the US? I don't remember seeing it. If it did run, what channel carried it? I adore this show. I notice all the other great shows, such as Waking the Dead, etc., have disappeared from the American airwaves. I detest the current BBC America programming, which looks far too much like vapid American programming: too many insipid reality shows, so-called dramas/comedies about teeny-boppers (WTF cares about teens?) and now the ubiquitous occult show, Demons. I seldom tune into BBC America, save for kitchen-related programming and Dr. Who. I want my BBC back!

We have not seen the last two seasons here in the USA because the morons on the BBC AMERICA decided not to show any quality stuff like WITB or Waking the Dead. It is now all reality crap and cooking shows. The BBC AMERICA really went down the tubes! I guess I will have to buy the complete WITB on dvd to see the episodes I missed such as the one you guys mentioned about Tony being accused of murder. I doubt that American TV will make a version, they too are being run by morons who have no concept of quality, intelligent and thought provoking programming. If it wasn't for shows like LAW and ORDER and CSI the TV would seldom be on in my house. However, I am grateful for Masterpiece Mystery.

It's always been made by ITV and shown on ITV in the UK. Just because something appears on BBC America it doesn't necessarily mean that the BBC had anything to do with it's production.

Unfortunately, ITV is cost-cutting heavily and it looks like Wire in the Blood has been one casualty.

Am in agreement with Strangeinvader that Tony's killing of Michael is completely justified; however, I do recall it being suggested that he was responsible for the death of an inmate in season five (remember the fly)- of course his use of "the power of suggestion" went undetected.

The show will be sadly missed. I discovered it in 2010 and have completed the series, although have as yet to see Tony in America.

There is a rumor that American TV station (heard it was CBS) might be making an American version!!!

It's a shame we are so freakin desperate for material here. The funny part is, the show is not THAT original. Yet the unimaginative nitwits at some network will try to copy the show, most likely scene by scene. Top notch brit shows like Footballer's (the best cheese ever) and WITB cannot be translated properly but they will still give it a go which ends abruptly in failure. I would recommend that a network show the original but they won't.

Oh hell. I just logged on to see why BBC hadn't shown an episode since last fall to find out it's over. I watched every season and rewatched the videos with no idea I watched the final episode. Que sera, sera. All good things come to an end. Recently many of them. A Canadian series called Intelligence was cut last year and before that the wonderful Sopranos. I'm running out of quality material to watch and what will I do without my fix of Robson Green. There is no way Waking The Dead, M-15 or Spooks even compares to the quality and breadth of Wire in the Blood. I hope the US doesn't reinvent this series. It's too nuanced and serious for US tele fodder. Are there plans for anything new with Robson Green?
I agree with many of you. BBC has gone to pot. Knowledge network has picked up quality repeats but very little is new and so captivating.

Production costs - that's the supposed reason. Except there's no reason the first three seasons weren't as good as or better than the last three, and the production costs were certainly not as significant.

I'm not defending the decision to cancel, mind, because given the drek here, I'll take the Wire in the Blood anyday, but just playing a bit of devil's advocate: hadn't the show rather reached its nadir? I mean, how many serial killers can there really be in a place like Bradfield when there aren't that many operating in the United States at any given time during a year? Unless they're all just gagging to let Tony Hill have a go at their respective psyches. It's like the per capita murder rate in Murder, She Wrote. Pretty soon, the show would just become a farce. Perhaps it's better to let it go while it's still pretty damned good (though never as good without Hermione Norris).

As to Tony's being arrested over Michael's death, I think, given the fact that he'd been given police protection, he was abducted out of his car, and one of his immediate colleagues ended with her head boiling in a pot of basil (don't know about that basil bit, just theorizing from the Keats' poem), I think you can safely say that there will be an inquiry, but in no way will charges be laid against Tony. And Tony may not have killed Anjelica Bains, but he ventured into the dark side there, and the series managed to continue. That really was the epitome of Tony walking hand in hand with murder for me.

Best Episodes: the Mermaids Singing; Redemption; and Synchronicity.

The American version is going to be slag city unless they decide to do it on a pay channel like HBO, Showtime, Starz, etc... The censors would take out anything non-pc, eliminate the nudity, and lower the violence. Plus, they'll probably give the lead character to some beefcake actor too young to be taken seriously.

Robson played Tony Hill to perfection. His social awkwardness didn't seem at all contrived. Plus, those piercing blue eyes that were so often displayed on numerous close-ups in the later seasons were just gorgeous. ;)

I know a lot of people were against it, but I really preferred Alex Fielding to Carol Jordan. I don't know how Carol was portrayed in the book, but on screen she came off as a real opportunistic witch who basically took credit for everything Tony did, contributed nothing to the investigation (except for the ep where she was hit by a car), and would constantly yell at Tony out of frustration or what appeared to be mood swings. Alex asking Tony to "think" came out as supportive urging whereas Carol would shout at him like an abusive school teacher.

Some of that may have been how the character was written though, so I'm not blaming the actress who played her, per se. And while I'm not usually a fan of kids in serious drama series, I really enjoyed the dynamic that Fielding's son, Ben, brought to the relationship.

I just finished watching this show on DVD (fortunately my local library has copies of the entire series). I really have enjoyed it as one of the edgier detective series I've seen in a while. From checking the internet, it appears this show was cancelled after it finished broadcasting its last (6th) season, so the writers may well have intended to continue it. One thing that struck me as odd was that in the final episode ("The Dead Land"), the character of Alex was mostly missing, with the explanation being that she was attending to her mother's funeral. I am wondering if the writers were intending to write that character out of the show and replace her with the DI Hall character. Or was it just that Lahbib was busy and couldn't work on that particular episode. I guess we'll never know for sure now. Too bad it is over. And I hope they don't try to clone it here in America.

I'll throw up all over myself if they do an american remake. maybe we should propose it as a bill in congress, then that way it will never happen. yeah, topical...i went there bwah ha ha.

I just finished a major marathon of watching the whole series for the past week. I feel as if I have been left hanging. Oh man! I wish they had shows like WITB in the US, not to say that I want them to remake this show...not at all, cuz it wouldn't be the same without Robson Green playing Tony. That actor is irreplaceable...as well as all the other regulars. They make the show! Oh well, I guess I'll have to move on and find another gem on Netflix! RIP WITB!!!
