Torment

How did the police woman program the killers? This show would need half an hour just to explain that part.

"Surely you can't be serious" "I am serious, and don't call me Shirley"

I think they make a reference to it during the 'guess the number' game in the undercover surveilence truck, suggestion and manipulation. The programmed killers were no doubt initially disturbed to start with but with her additional manipipulation and suggestive contexts she managed to program them to kill believing that they are always hearing her commands.

Or she perhaps only commanded them for the first killings and then the remainder were like an auto pilot of the killer hoping to hear her commands again...

When you talk to God it’s called prayer...when God talks to you it’s called schizophrenia...

I decided to bump this old thread rather than making a new one.

I saw this episode several years ago, but it went right over my head. I thought that mind control was similar to hypnosis, requiring only a snapping of fingers or "Count backwards from ten" by the controller. That is not the case.

I watched this episode again today. I remembered who the controller was (the correct term is "handler") There was NO explanation of how in the world she would have had the time to properly create the alters in these men by trauma-based mind control. It is done by a regimen of physical torture that is almost always sexual at the same time, such as being electrocuted in the genitals. Once successful, the victim can THEN be controlled by a simple cue such as a word or gesture.

I don't have the patience to stare at the screen as I watch shows, so I probably missed some of the visuals. But two examples of symbolism were blatantly obvious:

1. "Duality" (a thing and its opposite) was represented by the black and white chequerboard floor. No real psychiatric hospital would have such a stimulating design to irritate the patients! Ridiculous.

2. One eye. The final, long shot was of only the left side of Tony Hill's face as he walked toward the camera. I don't know if there is a proper name for the one-eye-hidden symbol.

The hospital-patient killer knew that he had another "person" inside of him. This seems wrong. Alters are not aware of each other.
A more full, honest exploration of mind control would be fascinating to see in a deep show like WITB.

I've never seen this show before and this is the first episode for me... I'm an hour in and hooked, it's really well done. A bit gruesome but great otherwise.
