The last shot of the movie *** spoiler ***

I thought the very last shot of the movie was one of the most beautiful I have ever seen. I couldn't help but think how so many other directors would have butchered the scene by editing in a bunch of melodramatic closeups and maybe thrown in a flashback or two just for the heck of it. The one, continuous long shot which at first emphasized Charlie's insignificance compared to the Arctic and then showed him being literally surrounded by the Inuit was so touching. Sigh... not too many movies like this around, more's the pity. Thank you, Charles Martin Smith!

we enter the world alone and leave the world alone,as this theme ws more than
stressed during the movie.

I would have liked to see his buddies back at the bar greet him

That final moment was indeed a rare moment in film. The distant shot was disconcerting at first because scenes like this always seem to evolve into a zoom that puts you right into the action. The incredible way Martin Smith showed the way the landscape overpowered those humans hit me in the gut. Then when they moved (almost like penguins I thought!) to surround Charlie, the tenderness of the group, the human family, and therefore safety, really broke me down emotionally. God, it was SO good!

Do we know what happens after this last shot?

Does he return to the town to find his family and friends or does he stay with the Iniut people.

Very good film and ending though

reply

i know what happened... the inuit people gathered round him, and savagely beated him then ate him because he failed to save the inuit girl and they don't like their type. as the kid said... "ah gah da se da ooos" which means, intruder alert, let surround and eat him"

reply

yeah...I totaLLY agree, i looked in the Inuit-English dictionary and.. well.. That`s what they say. :))))))))))

Charles Martin Smith made a BIG MISTAKE if the interpretation is correct? They were only taking their revenge for the "White Man " introducing " TB " into their culture?? brilliant film other than that The last shot of the film, I thought it was his " Norseman " ( for about 5 second's ) coming down to land.AS most have said C.M.S did not take the easy option, the semi-wide angled shot? showed just how vast & unforgiving this part of the world really is ------- Big Al.

yes. and "pulu see bagoomba" is Kupa-Kai for "free the Prisoners" , but as Gilligan said "would-You-believe that I've been-dead for so-long that I-forgot?"

reply

please take your racism elsewhere. the only people who ever savagely killed others for no reason was european colonizers. know you’re hurting native youth 18 years after you wrote thist. the only thing those native people would do is find a colonizer to actual find their culture useful. the only reason colonizers survived was us. remember that.

reply

But the Inuit are "colonizers" as well since their ancestors came from Asia to settle in the Americas via Beringia. In other words, they're not "native" to the Western Hemisphere and I'm speaking as part-Abenaki.

Furthermore, your post supports the laughable myth that the Americas were a peaceful paradise before Euros & others arrived when nothing could be further from the truth. When Columbus' expedition landed on Guanahani (San Salvador) they readily noticed that some of the islanders had visible wounds to which they explained they were in conflict with the predominant tribe from a nearby island (in what is today the Bahamas). These neighbors tried to capture/enslave them.

So the Americas were anything but a peaceful paradise in the pre-Columbus era. Tribes were in constant warfare with each other. One tribe took from another if they had the numbers/unity/might. For instance, the Lakota took from other tribes to acquire "their" land in the Black Hills. What about the captives some tribes took and heinously tortured, like gouging out their eyes or genitals so they couldn't see or have sex in the hereafter? What about the human sacrifice committed on a large scale thinking it nourished their "gods"? What about the headhunters, such as the Shuar?

One last thing, you failed to notice that the poster funnylolly was speaking in jest, but you're so obsessed with virtue-signaling your supposedly noble "native" status you couldn't see the obvious.

I love the last scene. It brought a lump to my throat. It was really beautiful.

reply

As to what happened after the last scene. I imagine that he wintered over with the Inuit, and in the spring got word out and then someone came to pick him up and give him a ride to Yellowknife.

I agree that it was a beautiful film. The only thing missing were the millions of carnivorous mosquitos and biting flies that are major pests in the summer months in northern Canada.

The Inuit co-star Annabella Piugattuk as Kanaalaq was adorable. A very nice relationship.

I missed the final scene......were they rescued or not???? I don't mind a spoiler because I walked out of the room briefly and I would like to know. Thanks.

reply

Dude! How could you do such a thing! Anyhow, remember the opening scene - the Inuit folks see a lone figure walking toward them out of the snowy haze - guess who? Yes, our man, the cocksure pilot. Actually, our new man, as I don't think he'll ever be the same man, again! The final scene was all shot from a wide-angle distance, as described above. Now, what I missed from the movie (or would love to see in a sequel), was this changed man re-entering his former life, etc. I could see him defending that drunk Inuit he had previously pushed away in the bar - and using his piloting skill to be a blessing to the Inuit people. But, wow, what an incredible flick!

reply

LOL yeah that was pretty bad that I missed the ending, but I only looked away for a MOMENT so it must have been a fast ending. But thanks for the description of the ending, I probably wouldn't have seen this again for a while!!

reply

100% agree. Perfect ending. Smart director. Less is more.
