rubbish film

dunno why u peeps are arguing over this film. i've seen it and it's about as appealing as a deep rectal itch.

reply

That's because you're probably an American who has never heard of the likes of Charlie Richardson, Ronnie Kray, Jack McVitie and Manny Fryde. These were the psychotic killers that terrorised London's East End in the 1960s. You sir are an idiot.

Cactusx's views on films cannot be trusted. Here's what he said about the woeful JANE AUSTEN'S MAFIA!:

"even though the first 10 mins did make me laugh its the real humour that takes place aftwerwards."

He also "can't believe Vas Blackwood isnt the celebrity he should be".

Of course he'd appreciate the work of Malcolm Needs!

reply

Thanks eternally for sparing me the embarrasment in the fact that I didn't know who Malcolm Needs is. (I checked his name.)

I had a good mind to be offended by your comments but then I found you were a Frank Sinatra fan. You think I like crap films, I think you like crap music. That's what we call a compromise.

But Vas Blackwood is The Man. I can see what you're getting at; I seem to show favour to gangster films. But I don't love them all. If you hated Charle, Lock Stock or Mafia, that's your problem

reply

Hey now im an American and i loved it and ahve heard of them as well^__^

"That's because you're probably an American who has never heard of the likes of Charlie Richardson, Ronnie Kray, Jack McVitie and Manny Fryde"

I'm English. I just think that Charlie is as appealing as a deep rectal itch.

reply

I enjoyed this film, despite not being British, American, nor having in-depth knowledge of any of these killers.

What I don't enjoy is ignorance, when posting commentary, in particular when it has nothing whatsoever to do with the film.

If you're hellbent on posting offensive remarks about another user, you can quickly be directed to the proper venue.

reply

trust some *beep* up americans to have bad views on british films and gangsters.all in all,its the americans who got they're heads kicked in by frank fraser & co.

reply

"Charlie" is just about one of the worst movies of 2004. There isn't a redeeming factor, the film is terrible.

The best brit gangster movie of all time is "Sexy Beast". If the makers of "Charlie" had got a decent scriptwriter and a half decent Director, cast a proper actor instead of a baby faced ex boy pop star, they would have achieved a better result. I think Charlie Richardson himself could have made a better movie about his wild days.

reply

You should enjoy L4YER CAKE then

films based on historical events, can and do suck at times regardless of the subject matter. Charlie is a no go. It is slow, and the actors spare no expense hamming it up. I am all for exploitation cinema, but the VIOLENCE was even few and far between in order to keep my attention. By saying this movie sucks does in no way, shape, or form put down the intense legacy that these gangsters left, so even if people don't like it, it doesn't take away from brit gangsters or brit cinema.

besides, if it aint hammer or amicus, then......

I only bought this movie coz I'm an extra in it. The jail scene when Charlie throws his poop on the guards - I'm directly behind the guy next to him. Woohoo! Fame and fortune. That scene was filmed in Valkenberg, a mental institution in Cape Town, and while we were filming it the crazies were shouting for cigarettes. I thought the movie was pants, but what would I know; I only watched as far as 'my' scene.

reply

I think Sexy Beast is more of a heist movie, a very good one, but a heist movie nontheless. The Gangster part just supports the plot and gives Sir Ben Kingsley some credibility as being a scary little man. The Krays is by far my favorite British Gangster movie. Only problem was the lack of a US release date. It's actually one I would like to try to find on Laserdisc.
Also, While it wasn't particularly well directed, Charlie is more about the events than artistic reverence. It was a good film but as film biographies go I'm waiting for "The Guv'ner"

reply

Writing "frank fraser & co.," shows you're quite ignorant since he rarely led anything. Writing "all in all,its the americans who got they're heads kicked in by frank fraser & co.," shows you're either retarded or insane.

reply

Thanks for some sanity about discussing the film...not trashing it.
Interesting case, interesting film. Good job bringing it back to us.
Ignore the trashers; some must have a screw loose.

reply

completley agree. I saw this film after extensive reaserch on the so called, 'torture gang' and the krays, have read reg kray's book, and think that this gives a very fair portrayal of the Richardson gang, and shows the British judicial system up for what it really was.

reply

i liked it. leslie grantham wasnt really in it enough for my liking but it was a good film.

reply

I liked the movie personally, and I am not British, I found the movie for 6$ definatly a good buy

reply

I'm american and thoroughly enjoyed this movie, i would call this and Essex Boys, the British Goodfellas and Casino

reply

I think it's a fantastic film. I'm not comparing it in genre or style to Lock Stock or Snatch but I preferred it to them, particularly the latter. I've seen it a couple of times & really cannot see anything wrong with it, it kept me intrigued throughout & I thought Goss played the role superbly. I can only assume the problem were that there weren't 4 stories going on simultaneously that end up being rather feebly linked or any poncy camerawork, flashbacks & editing over substance which came with most other British films around that era.

reply

its a fantastic film, just as i like all american gangstere fils, eg goodfellows, casino, godfather etc, i lov these movies, british ones more, love honour obey, lock stock, snatch, revolver etc, brilliant films, just watch them and enjoy
