The Apocalypse is another name for the book of Revelation in the New Teatament (it is from the Greek word which means "revelation" and is used in some editions of the Bible in English, and is the ordinary title in French and other languages). The film uses motifs taken from Revelation, as is indicated by the expert Marie. (I use the word expert loosely, because the film makers know as much about the book of Revelation as the makers of Raiders of the Lost Ark know about the story of the ark from the Old Testament - which is to say, almost nothing). The angels - refering to the killer monks - is one such motif.
As for "New Europe," I have a feeling that that was an undeveloped theme, possibly from the book (which I have not read).
There is a reference in the film to the treasure, but no explanation as to what it was, except to say that is is the most beautiful picture a Christian could possess.
The film was enjoyable, but the plot line had a number of defects.
