*SPOILER ALERT* Ending question.

So, what's with the gunshot and the message that her son just killed himself.
Is this an allegory relating to the "end of the youthful dream" of making my own movie my own way?
Was this the end of the innocence?
Has anyone a theory?
If I'd blinked, I'd have missed it altogether.

I really don't know the answer... I just watched it last night, and it is one of those films where afterwards I am thinking... "not sure what I just saw, but it was brilliant".

I was led to this film on my kindle after watching "Seaside", another french film.. I love french cinema though admittedly I often do not fully understand the points they are making!

I watched it last night (it's free on amazon prime), and I have the exact same questions as you have. I am German and experienced with european cinema, but this one puzzled me.

If anyone comes by here with ideas what might have been behind that gun shot and the message about the son having killed himself, please post! Even if you read this many years from now, please don't hesitate and post! Thank you!

I see it as the young filmmaker Julien's way of dramatizing (or over-dramatizing) his own story, making it more "cinematic" and truly existential than what he really experiences in the universe of the movie, with his somewhat half-hearted and obviously ineffectual attempt at slashing his wrists--it's what a novice or a pseudo-artiste would think of as Great Art...

He's retelling a real life story in a different way to make it seem more dramatic/interesting. This is perhaps a critique of filmmaking -- it's all a lie.
