Every great director is allowed a stinker

The ladykillers was certainly that . Even made " hudsucker proxy " seem good . Except made Kubrick who was always good .

reply

Allowed. And this is not a stinker, not their best, but not a stinker.

What in the Coen canon is worse the " the ladykillers "?

reply

In my opinion Millers Crossing, The Hudsucker Proxy, Intolerable Cruelty, and maybe Raising Arizona. Although I only saw it once many years ago.

reply

I agree with " hudsucker proxy " as it was poor . The others mentioned weren't great but not as bad as " lady killers " . But 'millers crossing 'was a coen masterpiece . Like most of their work it gets better on second viewing . The story , the writing , acting , cinematography all top notch .

reply

I'll give Millers Crossing another try.

reply

Yeah millers crossing is a true classic! Hudsucker and intolerable cruelty I have yet to see. For me lady killers, burn after reading and yes...wait for it...my least favorite coen bros film is...hail Caesar. Just couldn't get into these flicks although I would be remiss to call any of them stinkers, they just failed to make a connection with me.

reply

Millers Crossing is very good. Hudsucker was good. intolerably cruelty was good.

Ladykillers was prob the worst IMO. Lowest tier for sure. I was ready to turn it off after 20 min. It got better near the end, but wasn't great either. The funniest actor in the movie was the painting on the wall.

Unpopular, but I never loved Raising Arizona or O'Brother much. The rest are good or great.

reply

Hail Caesar and O Brother Where Art Thou.

reply

Hahaha, the movie is alright, but this can also be one example where the trailer may be better than the film.

Except the Coen Brothers have more than one stinker on their CV, there's the recent mess "Hail, Caesar", for instance, which is even worse than this mess. There are probably others, but I haven't seen every film they've made, just most of them.

I will give them credit for making what I call "interesting failures" when they get it wrong.

reply

Even though they wrapped a screwball comedy around them, there are actually some pretty deep themes at play here. This isnt the throwaway comedy the surface might suggest.
