Filmed in my home town

This movie was filmed in my hometown of Snyder, TX, which is also where Buddy and his mom and sister are from. I remember when Julia Roberts and George Strait came to film. I'm not sure where some of the buildings are, but the building where Buddy won Reserve Champion was in the Scurry County Coliseum in Snyder.

That is my husband's hometown as well. It was really fun looking for all the places that we are familiar with. The tall buildings in the back ground of one scene, I think is in Midland. and i think that one of the roads they are driving down is the road to C-City. Another part my husband thinks the school in the back ground is East Elementry. Then when the kids are collecting cans you can see the famous white buffalo statue that is in the small park on the road between Post and Snyder. I could just go on and on.

this thread is really old and no one will probably read this but, this kid who plays buddy is NOT from TX. I've known him for years, we went to school together and he's from TN.

I believe that guy meant Barry, but anyways, it was cool seeing stuff from my hometown, as I now live 1000 miles away from there. I remember a lot from when they were filming it, Julia Roberts, I heard was unreachable and not very in touch with the residents.

reply

I lived there at the time and talked with Julia Roberts. She walked around just like everyone else and had many people talk with her.

reply

I'm sure you saw different things than I did, I don't wish to argue that with you. I do know that was probably the biggest thing to happen to Snyder in my 20 years of living there.

I think the person ment that in the "movie" that is where they are from, not the kid that played Buddy. I also lived in Snyder at the time & remember everybody getting mad if the stars didn't drop everything & pose for pictures with the locals. I am sure that gets really old really fast. I saw them alot because I worked for one of the places they used as a set. It was fun to see it all get made. I watched it the other day & noticed several local people I know in there.

Digging up an old thread. Part of this was also filmed in Alpine. I had to cancel a hair appointment because they were using the shop. I just saw this movie over the weekend and I didn't see it all. I only saw one shot of the courthouse, but I missed over half of the movie.

I grew up in Clovis, NM which is about 2 1/2 hours from there, but watching this movie today was like being home. Driving to Dallas means going thru Snyder and Post. Plus we all grew up around 4H and the dread of selling our animals we raised.

reply

That's why I always showed heifers! I could have never worked with an animal that much and sell it to be slaughtered. It breaks my heart now when I have to take a sick, injured, or old cow to the market. Our bull broke his, um, you know, a couple of years ago and I had to take him off before he died from it. It was so sad, because my daughter had shown him since he was 5 months old. He weighed 2000 lbs and was just a big old pet.

Does anyone know any other movies about cattle shows?

reply

um, actually, i think it was Julia's neice, Emma Roberts who is in the movie. But maybe Julia went also so............

reply

Julia had that one brief scene in the movie.

It appears that the entire population of Snyder has posted in this thread. :-)

I have a very good friend who lives in Snyder now, but he didn't at the time of the movie.

reply

Probably, I know Snyder has dwindled incredibly. Now I'm overseas, and I still miss it.

Hi arussell_1977,
THIS is a late reply, nearly 5 years later :)

In the scene in the superette (day before they
drive to Big Texas) you can see the "real"
adress of Hallie Keen: Rural Road 1 , Snyder
She payed 52.43$ by Cheque at 5-1-2001 :D

Does this street really exist? I didnĀ“t find it.
Snyder seems to be a bigger town, having watched
the movie I thought it was a tiny village...
