I didn't find a thread talking about this, but did anyone else find the beginning scene to be completely pointless?

I'm talking about the part where the father is going home and gets mugged. The attacker realizes the person they're mugging is his old teacher and because that was the best teacher he ever had they just leave him.

The father doesn't even mention this. Why did the filmmakers include this as a part of the movie? You can remove this scene and nothing is changed about the plot.

It's so weird.

So the father wouldn't hesitate (much) to move out of the big old dangerous city into the safe countryside.
