Scarlett Johansson is Griet

For me this movie is one of the best I have ever seen. Scarlett totally drew me into this film. I watched it on the IFC channel by accident in about November '07. After seeing the story I couldn't get it out of my mind. Soon after seeing it, I went to the library to read the book "Girl with a Pearl Earring" written by Tracy Chevalier. It just added more wonderful details to the story. It is like knowing a small group of ordinary people from a time in history never to be forgotten because of a painting. No one will ever be able to play the part of Griet again for me. I would have given Scarlett Johansson an Oscar for best actress for her interpretation of Griet. The other players were absolutely great especially Colin Firth who did a magnificent job of underplaying his role as Jan Vermeer, the great Flemish painter. I have now seen this film four times on DVD since my first encounter. I have bought the book as a companion to the film. They belong together.

I cried when "Griet" being scorn, yelled at and chased out from the house just because she understands art. With her puzzled, confusing dazed look and angry look poor girl have no choice but to leave the house. I hope the real girl in the painting never get mistreatment in her lifetime.

She's absolutely adorable and gorgeously cute. Yummy she is just like how she said in Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle. I just can't take Drew sadness on screen and anywhere anymore. Seeing her sad aches my heart.

I read the book about 6 months ago, and thoroughly enjoyed it. At the time it didn't occur to me that it could translate to the "silver screen". I discovered a review of this title just a matter of days ago and was moved to see it. I don't usually descend to sweeping adjectives, but to my eye and mind, it's stunning. The director could have achieved a good movie, perhaps even a great movie, but has succeeded in creating a masterpiece in light and subtle colour.

Colin Firth does what he does best, dark and brooding, even better than Mr. Darcy in "Pride and Prejudice". Judy Parfitt almost steals the show with her sharp performance as the pipe-smoking matriarch. BUT as in the title of this post, Scarlett Johansson IS Griet. I need say no more.

Scarlett was amazing in the role of Greit. She is one of my favorite actors. I loved her in Lost in Translation and in Scoop.
