Griet slapping Cornelia

Granted the little rhymes with rich deserved it for smearing filth on the clean laundry. But beyond her breaking Griet's tile, nothing ever comes of it. Hard to believe a servant slapping one of the household's daughters wouldn't get her fired if not arrested.

The daughter couldn't say anything about it without her parents finding out what she'd done to provoke it, and she was too clever/cowardly for that. She just filed it away and looked for ways to get her revenge later.

I was so happy when Griet slapped Cornelia! Today Cornelia would be called a bully, and a nasty evil little bully.

reply

Cornelia assumed she took it out where it would hurt the most, i.e. destroying the tiles.

The tiles are described so beautifully in the book, btw.
