"Shall I clean the windows"?

Griet asks Catharina if she shall clean the windows, and the wife wont be bothered with the question.
However, when Griet says that the can change the lights, the wife tells her to do it.

Was that so Griet should get into trouble? Or because Catharina wanted to pretend she knew about the change of lights?

I simply adore Essie Davis in this. She is an amazing actress, and seeing her later as the glamorous Miss Fisher makes it even better.

Yes that intrigued me as well and i thought the second option you said. I thought she asked her to clean the windows to let her know that she knows the reason. But however as you mentioned the other option, it made me think of the other option as well but not sure though.
