AWFUL + UNWATCHABLE

I was excited to see this Robert Altman film. It was unwatchable. The acting was ghastly, and the writing full of so many cliches, i had to laugh out loud (McDowell playing the gray haired, tempermental, gay, head of the company, calling his company "babies", and wearing his yellow scarf, screaming things like "brilliant babies!", and cursing too often, while drinking coffee, sitting in a chair turned backwards--ugggggh). Neve was so bland, I was hoping she would be the one to break her achilles tendon early on (of course, this is a movie about dancing, so SOMEONE had to injur themselves this way---and of course, it happened.) And how many times do we have to listen to "My Funny Valentine?" Neve lives in this too cute/too expensive apartment in Chicago, with a perfect view of the trains.....Gratuitous nudity of female dancers in their dressing rooms, though no male nudity. Neve/Altman casting couch here?

I have almost zero interest in dance and ballet but I thought this was a really good movie, maybe because of the randomness of the story.

I did notice some cliches though (McDowell as the typical old geezer with infinite power...yeah whatever).

I thought that this was an amazing film. It was really beautiful. I agree that the plotline to the film was slight, and kind of predictable, but the film is about the dance more than the human drama. I honestly didn't think that the ballet master was portrayed as over-the-top. He's cliched in the sense that he is true to the model that many ballet masters, conductors, and coaches portray. I have been involved in music for a long time, and when you get good, the best conductors are often like McDowell's character. They are demanding, encouraging, visionary and a little stubborn all in one person.

Actually, Neve always dreamed of being a dancer when she was little, but a severe injury kept her from being able ot pursue it. Then turned to acting. Stop being so ignorant and think before you speak, *beep*

yes i also thought it would be good because I like James Franco and Nev. but damn it was a snooze fest
