worst movie ever

Terrible writing.
Bad acting.
Brutal photography.
Crap editing
phony and useless.
I think Ms Campbell, having been cut from the national ballet school in Canada, wanted to get revenge on those who were successful in the dance world. This movie is sure to reinforce in the public mind that ballet is horrifyingly boring and stupid.
Poor Mr Altman has clearly gone senile, generally movies have plots, Sir.
Both Chicago and Moulin Rouge prove that, with a little skill in the fill-making, even relatively un-trained dancers ( Zelwegger, Zeta-Jones, Kidman) can look fantastic dancing on camera.
Not in this one. Poor Ms. Campbell. I’m sure the folks in Toronto thought, “so that’s why the let the poor thing go”.
Oh yeah, what the hell happened to the Joffery Ballet? They used to be solid “B” team now they look like miss daisy’s ballet barn students.
All those out there reading this… Don’t judge ballet based on this.
Go see New York City Ballet or San Francisco Ballet.
It can be the most beautiful and inspiring of arts, really.

What happened to your spelling?

ok although i didnt think it was the best movie, not everything has to have a plot! just because its not a typical movie and there isnt an obvious storyline, doesnt mean its a bad film. i enjoyed it. im a dancer and though i cant say ive ever danced at that level, the dancing wasnt bad at all! neve wasnt that good i'll admit, but shes an actress now not a dancer..and although you're entitled to your opinions, i thought that zeta-jones and zellwegger (excuse the spelling errors if any) were just plain bad. for the amount of time and the dance instructors they got im sure lots of people could have looked as good if not better. and i thought the rest of the ballet was great! the actual ballets that they performed i didnt think were so hot, but in general i think their technique and control was amazing...theyre a great company..so just because the movie didnt have a plot and wasnt blatently obvious and hollywood, dont bash it please. i know everyones entitled to their opinons, so thats mine.

I have to agree entirely with mark-adam. This was nothing more than the worst excuse possible for a vanity film. Neve was at least interesting in Scream; in this flick, the implication was that she couldn't act her way out of a wet paper sack. The modern ballet was some of the worst dance pieces ever put on film. There was no plot, no acting, and all I can think is that Malcolm McDowell must have really needed a paycheck. I'm disgusted that I wasted 2 hours of my life on this movie, and generally I enjoy ballet movies even when the story & acting aren't top notch. But this travesty is pointless.

reply

I agree with mark-adam and cosmicbabe. This movie was totally pointless and horrible. It had absolutely no plot and horrific writing. This movie is nothing more than numerous ballet performances which are totally irrelevant to the characters or each other for that matter. The storyline was terrible because there was none! The movie had no sense of direction or character development. Everything seemed just splattered all over the place then glued back together. I think the filmmakers spent way too much time on the dancing than on the actual components of the film.

reply

Yeah well you probably liked Center Stage, and not in an ironic way.
Ok actually that was a funny movie.
"She's a heartbeat away from tattooing your name on her ass!"
Tee hee.

What makes you think that?
Who knows where thoughts come from, they just appear!

reply

Hi, As a filmmaker I just want to let mark-adam and others know that they have absolutely no idea what they are talking about. Altman makes movies for smart people. people who don't need a plot thrown down their throats to give you an emotional experience. For people who can read between the lines and don't need things spelled out for them. And your comment that the cinematography was "brutal" is just laughable, Andrew Dunn is an amazing Director of Photography and the images in that movie really capture the spirit of ballet, which I'm guessing your just pretending to know about. I could go on and on, but enough said.

reply

I didn't enjoy this movie. The dancing was good and even mesmerizing in some parts. It's nice of you, Moveefrk, to correct us in our views that some things are just not good. I like the fact that Altmas takes a risk, in doing a non-conventional movie, but that doesn't mean I have to like the output, or be smart to appreciate it. The fact that Andrew Dunn is amazing does not impress me, but since you typed it it must be true. You are trying to create a "smart" (your word) class, which excludes those who have divergent opinions as stupid. Let me guess who else is a genius...Woody Allen, Martin Scorsese, Stanley Kubrick? Given a choice of a filmfest of these ueberintellectuals or an Urkel marathon, I'd gladly dress up in my floodpants and horn-rims...

To end on a positive note, I like your assertion that the images really capture the spirit of ballet. I agree. But they failed to capture the spirit of the viewers, which I feel is the joy of film, being drawn in and manipulated and cerced to pain, pleasure, and pathos.

reply

I loved your gross generalization about film "nerds"...guess my wardrobe is not up to par considering I dont have horn-rims or "floodpants". It's all objective, I guess, since I thought the movie captured both the spirit of ballet and the viewer. I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree.

reply

I can agree on that. Also, I'm sorry, but I think you misunderstood my Urkel comment. I was just saying I'd rather watch the lowest form of entertainment (lame sitcoms, eg Urkel) than the supposed highest form of film (the product of the intelligentsia), not insulting film nerds.

reply

You don't have to be smart at all to appreciate what Altman is trying to do with this film. Believe me, I'm living proof. You don't have to be a dancer, either. Even though I enjoy cutting the rug, my endeavors in that area could not be described as graceful or beautiful by any means.

The Company does require you to be willing to accept the movie on Altman's terms. Altman's career of distinct and distinguished filmmaking has earned him at least that much from me. He has never been as interested in plot as he is in behavior. Cinema is unmatched in being able to show us behavior, and Altman is unmatched in his ability to take advantage of that fact.

reply

This movie was fantastic, but not for everybody.

reply

Yes it was boring. I started out very awake and then almost fell asleep. You don't need a plot per say but a movie does need to be involving which this wasn't.

reply

Alright you macho opinionated baloon head. She trained for several months 8 hours a day, click the trvia. Just because you didn't get the movie doesn't mean it was dumb. Nicole Kidman didn't really dance in Moulan Rouge, I have seen that movie countless times because I love it, but there was no talent in her dancing. How many actresses actualy do their own stunts huh!? Not many! This girl has guts. Even if she was cut from Canada the doesn't mean she is bad. She obviously worked her a$$ off for this movie. I also saw Chicago,, tha dancing does not blow you away. In this movie The Company, it does.
I did notice that sometimes the lights blinded the camera shots when the dancers were performing, I think that was on purpose, obviously it was or those shots wouldn't have made it past the editing room. This movie was capturing what its like to be a performer.
Not all movies have plots, take documentaries! Why should every movie have to be the same, why should this one have to meet your standards and expectations? It shouldn't, and it better not because you're a negative person who has an attitude problem and you have no experience in this field. Just because you have been a spectator at performaces does not make you by any long shot an expert.
You and I have no idea why she was let go from Canada and thats how it should stay. She may have asked to be let go for reasons inside her family, or who knows! Not based on talent. Where in this movie did she dance bad? She didn't and most importantly (and this is more than i can say for Julia Stiles, and I even liked that movie, bought it, and watched it just last month again) she did her own dancing. That my friends is owning your performance.

Question; Why would you Mark Adam or w/e say; This movie is sure to reinforce in the public mind that ballet is horrifyingly boring and stupid.
And then contradict yourself horribly with; Don’t judge ballet based on this.
Go see New York City Ballet or San Francisco Ballet.
It can be the most beautiful and inspiring of arts, really.

Yeah, you're a bright bulb.

reply

I have to throw this up here because this "movie" is not even a movie. It's not a documentary. It's not Neve Campbell sticking anything to anybody. It's just a mess.

The "plot" of this movie is people dancing and then stuff happens and then more dancing. This is not a "smart" person's movie and you don't have to "get it" because there is nothing to get.

Yes, ballet can be beautiful. Yes, Neve Campbell used to be a ballet dancer. Yes, Robert Altman can be a fantastic director (every director has those one or two movies that everyone can agree is not a fine piece of work). But The Company completely thrashes at all of that. People dance, people talk, people dance. There is no story. Stuff just happens. In order for a movie to have a plot and for stories and characters to develop things must happen because of other things and force questions to be answered, decisions to be made thus developing a person into who they are. This does NOT happen in this movie. It almost seems like there were two different movies put into one. The behind the scenes stuff that seemed like it should develop when it doesn't, and the dancing which is just there. This movie was pointless because it doesn't have a plot. It has a somewhat story, but no plot.

What Mark Adam meant was that this movie is boring and makes ballet seem boring. Don't judge ballet based on this movie and I agree.

In response to MOVEEFRK, congrats on being a filmmaker. What does that have to do with this movie being horrible. Of all of the films that Altman has done this is the least inventive, the least courageous, and hands down the stupidest. It didn't seem like there was much of anything as far as a script went so it's not his fault that nothing was very good but why would he even consider doing this in the first place? It's just a horid "movie."

And I have a question before I go; what the hell was that thing at the end? Was that supposed to be a joke or what? The parents couldn't figure out what the hell was going on and neither could I. I thought that I was supposed to take it seriously because all of the dancers were but then I saw the parents and knew exactly how they felt. What the hell was that? Was it a joke?

reply

Remind me, what happened at the very end that you're speaking of? I seem to have forgotten.

I liked this film. I completely disagree with all the above posts that are stating that movies absolutely have to have plots in the traditional (or modern) sense. And I also disagree that the cinematography was bad. I thought it was beautiful, as were the performances.

It's not a great film, but it's good, IMO. Altman creates a very smooth tone. And I enjoyed experiencing the dual feeling of intimacy and estrangement from the ballet company, because that seems to be how the dancers feel as well.

reply

I enjoyed watching the dance performances, they were done very well, and with much facundity. Watching then dancers on stage I found to be absorbing. The costumes were impressive also as was the musical contributions.

However, between the dance performances, the movie was a let down. It just didn't grip the audiance or cut it as a good storyline or consuming at all. I found myself skipping the in between canter and going right to the perfomances.

I personally believe Center Stage was a better professional dance company themse movie. Of course neither of them beat Flashdance.

reply

I was talking about that performance they put on at the end. When Neve Campbell dresses up as that purple...thing with the balloon tied onto the top of her head. Was all of that supposed to be a joke?

reply

anything with james franco in is fine by me. would have to agree though, not the best :S

reply

I really enjoyed this, maybe not so much for the writing, but I do think the dance sequences were stunning and the use of colours/set pieces were wonderful. Persoanally I thought that the choreography was there to convey the charecters emotions, in a world when you have to stay strong as you are part of a very close knit community that rely on each other for help/support. Also I thought there was quiet alot of symbolism there. This was Neve's film, she did everything and I think she should be applauded for trying something different

reply

Ry gets injured in the Blue snake performance and is quickly gotten offstage and out of her costume, her arm in a sling. Meanwhile she is immediately replaced by Maia, who was injured when they were rehearsing the Blue Valentine pas de deux (Ry replaced her). Meanwhile James Franco is on the opposite side of the stage, in the wings, trying to give flowers to Ry.

reply

Over all i have to say this was a great movie. I agree is didn't have a plot but that is what makes it so interesting. The dancing was amazing. The point of the movie wasn't to give you a romantic love story or a thirlling action movie, it was to give you an insight on how the life of a perfessional ballerina really is. and i think Robert Altman did an amazing job at that. The dance on the swing was absolutly mezmorizing and being a dancer myself, i wish i could that dance that beautifully.

reply

Yeah, but you can still give insight by telling a story. Centerstage did that. Why couldn't this thing? And as for applauding Neve, I don't think so. If she wanted to make something that shows off her ballerina skills fine, don't try to pass it off as a movie though. Cut out the inbetween stuff and make it a ballet or flush out the inbetween stuff to make it watchable.

reply

This was meant to be a slice-of-life film; the daily lives of the characters was the plot.

Having said that, there were a few slow moments.

But overall I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. Too bad she followed it up with such a piece of cr#p.

Are you going to pull those pistols or whistle "Dixie"?
