White teeth, anyone?

I liked most of this series very much! It was quite different from the book in many ways, but in most cases it was obvious that what worked in the book would seem awkward on screen. However, my VCR decided to skip the bit between when the police starts going after the animal rights group in the van, and when Joely and Josh arrives at the launch. So I would really appriciate it if someone could tell me what happened with the police and where the rest of the group went, since I don't recall this being in the book.
And does anyone know why the English middle class family of the story was named Chalfen in the book and Malfen in the series? There must be some reason.
How come nobody's started a discussion on this one yet??

Well I didn't read the book but I can tell u what happened to the animal rights group when the police stopped them. The police opened the back of the van and Josh pushed them out of the van saying that they had and knife and the girl sped off and left them there.

...Joelie is also unaware that it is Josh's fault that her boyfriend was just arrested. Josh appears behind her and comforts her, saying "It's just you and me now," in a sneaky little voice. (I thought that moment was especially cute.)

In the book, Crispin doesn't get arrested does he?

reply

Thank you very much! That's a relief to know, now I can move on. =)
As to what happened in the book, it's not really spelled out how it ends for Crispin and the lot. There's no police and they all arrive at the launch and intend to go through with the plan, while Joshua has his doubts about whether his dad will really do what they expect him to. Then I suppose it never happens, because of Millat.
Also, there's nothing about Josh finally getting it on with Joely, instead we're told that "Irie and Joshua become lovers in the end; you can only avoid your fate for so long"...

Christopher Simpson also appeared in State of Play, funnily enough, alongside James McAvoy who played Josh Malfen in White Teeth!
