Loved the movie, One problem (OH MY GOD, SPOILERS!!)

The only problem with the movie that I had was near the end were Yossi is talking to Jagger right before he dies and while he is saying I love you and Ill leave with you, etc etc...he has this monotone voice. There is no emotion in it. He sounds exactly like he did when they were soiling the snow. I just didnt feel the love there. I felt like I was watching a documentary on "robots and the soldiers they love".

I just watched the movie today for the first time. While I see what you mean, I didn't perceive the scene in that way. Throughout the whole movie, Yossi was always less less expressive or prone to show his feelings than Jagger, no matter how deep Yossi's feelings were, so to me their last scene together didn't seem out of place. At some point I did think, "Why isn't he crying?", but I thought that either he needed some time to understand Jagger wasn't coming back, or he was crying inside.

I think Yossi was very, very reserved. He had become so good at hidding the fact that he was gay. I always had the feeling he was just freaking out on the inside but wouldn't show it.

I wholeheartedly agree.

I have to say that Yossi's feeling, to me, show through his actions rather than his voice in this scene. Here's this reserved man, terrified of coming out, and all of a sudden he's speaking to his lover without any inhibitions while another one of his subordinates is around. It's quite an impressive declaration of love, in its own way.

As for why the actor's voice is so mechanical... I can only say what I think and that's that the guy is on the verge of freaking out, but at the same time he knows that he has to go on functioning and his tone of voice stems from that precisely, from having this overload that he can't let out. In the conflict, he has to supress it. He can say that he loves this man, but he can't let it get to him.

That's why the following scene, when Yossi stands up and you can see the daze and confusion while he looks around at his men, still wound and spread out through the field, is so right and brilliantly acted in my opinion.

Sorry for the length. I just really love the movie. ;)

Matan4il, I think you really nailed it. Well said. I too just love this movie. I have watched it many, many times and cry every time.

Oh, it's so lovely meeting someone who equally loves this movie! It gets to me every time too. I only wish I could watch it more. Damn studies. You go, watch it another time for me as well! *hugs*

Yes, saw the film for the first time yesterday (in French though... damn*¨%£! Don't like dubbed films..) and totally agree with you matan4il!! The actor who plays Yossi is excellent in containing his emotions and you can see that he's really 'imploding' in some ways out of shear fear of showing his feelings.

The question I had too, is why wasn't Yossi crying at the end, when Ofir tells him that Jagger is dead.. Oh well, but you can see Ofir crying (I think) which is very touching!

I hope I'll be able to see it in Hebrew. Not that I understand a word, but I find the language sexy and anyway, I prefer OVs!

Question: when Yossi tells Jagger's mother which was Jagger's favourite song, does this tell them all, that Jagger was gay? I mean, the translation of the song lyrics, makes me think, that it's about 'coming out'.. Am I wrong?

EXCELLENT FILM! TOO SHORT! The fact that it's based on a real story, makes it just brilliant! Would love to know about the real Yossi and Jagger..

Thank you! :D And I adore Ohad Knoller, he's just brilliant over all and I do believe that this is his best role ever.

Knowing the type, I'd say that really, he can't let go. He's fall apart completely and that's not something he can afford when he's still needed as a commander. His sense of duty is too strong. And also, I think at that moment it hasn't sunk in yet.

Ooh, I think you're the first person to think that Hebrew is sexy. BUT I LOVE YOU FOR IT! *smooch*

*speaks Hebrew to you* (and you should also hear the actors' voices. They are teh sexy!)

No, I think the mother is so clueless about her son that unless Yossi came right out and told her, she wouldn't get that Jagger was gay. In fact, even then she'd probably have trouble wrapping her mind around that revelation.

AND I AGREE! It is too short, but even so, it's 15 minutes longer than the original, so I'm grateful that this movie came to be in the first place.

*BIG HUGS to you*

Hi matan4il - thank you for the smooch! And the Hebrew! I have actually been in a Hebrew class once (8 years ago), only for a year though and I still 'get' some of the words like 'klum', 'zman', 'mishpacha' and the figures.. But true, it's a sexy language..

Anyway, you are right with Yossis sense of duty being too strung and the fact that at the moment itself, it hasn't sunk in. Still, I was kind of missing a tear or two at the time when they are at Jagger's mother house. I did like the reaction of Yossi (Ohad Knoller) though, when he looks through the picture book and sees Jagger in the rabbit costume..

Really looking forward to seeing the movie in it's original version one day.

*BIG HUGS back to you!* (in Hebrew.. :o)

I saw the film 2 days ago on a french channel, one thing is, the film is too short and no real beginging( how their relation started and what's they been through before begin on the battle front), but it's brillantly played by the two main actors ( sorry for the other love affairs that happened in the film )
i guest it's the most beautifull and well balance film , i ever seen , which deal with such relationship,The song and the music was fabulous (it was in Hebrew but subtitled in french). The end was very touchy and left me in tears .

Hopefully i'llbe able to see the movie once more soon

I have watched the movie many times (more than 10), and I still get emotional everytime I hear the ending song.

Right before Jagger dies, Yossi did not say that he loved him, very possibly because he kept almost all his feelings within himself as through out the movie, and because Ofir is there right besides him.

Soon after he realized that Jagger died (as he was told), he could not help but saying "I love you" and making all the promises that he refused to make, hence we can see that he truely loved Jagger and yet, though his voice is not as emotional as we expected, it fits with the character well. And, if you really listen to the way he spoke, it WAS a way of showing his love to Jagger. It was not as happy as when they were playing in the snow, yet it was a bit more emotional than speaking to any other character (including Jagger in other situations) through out the film.
