This is not a 100% fully observational documentary. Generally for that to be true there should not be any interviews. Filmmakers like Pennybaker work like that--the camera and the filmmakers do not interact with the subjects. In this case the interviews are a form of becoming involved with the subject. Although it is rooted in the observational form, it does not stick to it to the extent that some might desire or expect (people have told me that Pennybaker is very big on this when he teaches at NYU). It is definitely not a participatory documentary, but the post was right about Super Size me being one.
Yeah, but having conventions of observational documentary is near enough.
