Speedway
I saw this on the BBC a while back and for the life of me did not get the connection to Speedway (the dirt-track motorbike version).
Anyone know why speedway was used and who the actual rider/s were?
How didn't you get it? It's quite obvious that Speedway was used in movie for 2 reasons (I'm commenting only the movie, not the actual happening in real world)
1. - Speedway is obviously the only interesting thing happening in this small town Krsko, that's why everyone is obsessed with it and/or somehow connected to it. Watching speedway and/or drinking alcohol. Only two "fun" things you can do in this remote town.
2. In speedway you are good if you are good at fast fixing and making fast bikes and have the right spare parts at all times. People illegally crossing to Italy are often killed and used for their spare parts (kidneys, liver and so on). The symbolism is obvious.
