Best opening scene ever?? [Spoilers]

Okay I realise that the opening to Star Wars must have been amazing when people saw it first. But this was just so unexpected. The hollywood way would be to have Colin Farrell as the clean cut hero leading man type. But his character is a total scumbag in this movie. He's having a romantic chat with the shop assistant, next thing he punches her in the face and robs her. I loved this movie, it's probably the best example of Irish black humour ever put on film.

Yeah, it was good - but probably not the best.

I still think that the best opening scene ever of a movie is Harry's Game.

Agreed

I kind of jumped in my seat in the flicks a bit when he punched that girl, wasn't expecting it at all at all!! I could feel that punch and all, it was a bit brutal alright!

I'd rather not give it away here.

Just know it's about the IRA, at a time when there was a lot going on about it.

If you're in the UK, you can get the DVD at Amazon. If you're in the US, you can get a used VHS at Amazon, under the title Belfast Assassin.

The girl that he punches, also gets punched by Cillian Murphy in "bitter harvest" or "how harry became a tree". its pretty funny!

I remember the first time I saw it I literally yelled "DAAAAAMN! Are you sh*ttin me?" It was awesome!

reply

oh i agree i watched this movie for the first time on an airplane and laughed so loud people turned to look at me. when he punched that girl i freaked. completely unexpected. but d amn memorable

I got to agree that Way of the Gun has this beat. Dont get it twisted, this movies intro was completely unexpected, but it wasn't as brash, or hilarious as the first three minutes of Way of the Gun.
Similar to Way of the Gun, the intro had no real bearing except to give us a little character, or show us what to expect from the Collin Farrell character.
Great, but not the best, Way of the Gun, hands down!

SORRY ABOUT ANY MISS SPELLING, ITS MY FIRST LABTOP, AND IM GETTIN USED TO THWE KEYPAD

I thought that the scene was very well done, and you really didn't see the punch in the face coming.

reply

i loved it. right afterwards i went out and punched the first woman i came across square in the nose!!!

a-with the big bs you dont want the rest, if i ever saw tom selleck...

reply

My cousin told me that i had to see this movie just cause of the opening, and he described what happened to me. im like "no fckin way does that happen" and ill be damned, it was exactly like he said.. and i laughed my ass off.

true story.

sooner or later We won't be able to speak English without worrying about someone getting offended

reply

I did not expect the punch in the face at all, so it was a very abrupt beginning. I liked it.

But the best opening sequence ever would have to be Fight Club IMHO.

When we are moving at the speed of life, we are bound to collide with each other

reply

Smacked her right out of the blue.
definately a good opening but I agree with you - Fight Club. That whole Ikea scene...

come, talk =)

reply

I completely agree, I was SO shocked the first time I saw it. It gives a lot of character, and is completely unexpected. I don't know if it's the BEST intro ever, but it sure is up there.

If you could blow up the world with the flick of a switch, would you do it?

reply

It suprised the crap out of me.

Loving the movie and the opening.

Also like the opening of the first Pirates of Caribbean movie when Johnny Depp arrive in port in his sinking ship.

reply

I love it too. I was two seconds from turning it off (thinking it was a romantic comedy) when that happened. The opening was so shocking it was classed as drama in my country. Clearly a comedy.
