What were they saying ?

Hi,

Can anybody tell me what the Chechens were arguing about over dinner. I guess it wasn't supposed to be subtitled but I'd still like to know.

Thanks.

reply

Ok here is my guess;

Well one of the guys in the group (Yusouf) did not like Ahmed to merry. Because he was already angry at Ahmed! Because Ahmed asked Zhanna to Merry him just to have some fun (He was not serious at the beginning remmember?).

Than some other guys joined probably saying hey he is right or wrong than BOOM! chaos in a few seconds...

It's been a while, so translation might be a lil bit inaccurate.
The main guy says: Did u promise her to marry?
Akhmed: yes
-why u doin' this? she is poor sick girl, she believes u, she thinks you'll keep your promise, she thinks you're THE MAN! Are you?
Akhmed:I AM! and i will keep my promise...

P.S. It is a great shame for Chechenian not to keep his word. It's kinda hard to explain, u should be familiar with their culture to understand what they mean.

I just watched it yesterday and we thought it was the DVD that had a problem. The subtitles just go out for like 1 minute, then come back in the middle of the argument. We were going crazy cuz it seemed like they were saying something important. Why on earth does it do that??

Thanks for the translation. I had guessed that the soldier had taken moral umbrage over Ahmed teasing Zhanna like that, and that's what sparked the argument.

I just saw this movie on our SBS station. It had translations for this part. The rebel captain has asked Ahmed if he really said it and Ahmed owns up. When the other guy stands up and talks accusingly at Ahmed, we were shown the subtitles something like 'but, you are already in trouble for sexual assault!' It's not sexual assault its more something like indecency or harassment but I can't remember the exact line. Ahmed says I know! But I really did promise! and the fight breaks out not long after that. It casts some doubts on Ahmed's moral fibre but later he tells Zhanna how he often gets carried away and says things that he doesn't mean so to me it sounds like he has made this promise before and gotten into trouble for it. Maybe they dropped these subtitles because they make Ahmed sound pretty bad.

By the way I loved this movie a lot!

Wow, fossphur, I don't know where you got all that from but they don't say ANYTHING even close to that 'harassment' or indecency stuff AT ALL.
I don't remember it word for word but I watched the movie many times and what they say is almost exactly as follows:

The leader asks: "Is it true? Did you promise to marry her?"
He then repeats it in Russian.

Akhmed: "Yes, and?"

Leader: "Why are you bothering the girl? She is ill."

At which point, one of the guys at the table says: "Just let him be, he could die tomorrow."

The leader cuts him off: "We could ALL die tomorrow. A man should always be a man. Why are you messing with a sick girl? This is not something a man does."

Ahmed gets angry: "Are you trying to say that I'm not a man?" then he switches to Russian saying "You know what? I wasn't actually going to marry her but now I will!"

One of the guys at the table says something like "she's actually not bad. I wouldn't mind a go either."

To which, one of the other guys responds with something along the lines of "What the hell kind of talk is this, you (insult)"

And the fight breaks out.

Cheers zandak.

I've always wondered what they argue about, and the harassment stuff just sounded completely out of place for this film, I thought it would be trolling. So sad.

I figured it would be something more along those lines. Cheers for the information.

No problem, Odilwerk. Odd that they didn't include subtitles for that part as the whole thing would make little sense to me without understanding what happened there.

reply

Well, mainly, they were upset that Ahmed promised to marry Jana even though she was a "nutcase."
