Why Konchalovsky can't do more films like this?

I mean, he's terribly underrated director when you consider all those truly great films he's made (Maria's Lovers, Siberiada, Uncle Vanja, The First Teacher, The Romance of the Lovers, Runaway Train). Let me say that when he's really good he can be easily much better than his younger brother N.Mikhalkov. Did you see his remake "Lion in Winter"? another underrated (tv movie) even though it won many awards lately. I should also mention here that his work from the 70's was very influential for many artists including Woody Allen.

My point is, that to me it seems that Konchalovsky's even sort of underrating himself, i read a few of his brilliant scripts that were rather given away to other directors, (Andrei Tarkovsky's "Andrey Rublyov") why!? (he's lazy to direct himself? i don't think so)
I think his directing talent is quite underused these days, don't you think?
