Laughable how everyone stops fighting mid-battle

It was hilarious how they suddenly called off an ongoing battle because Achilles cousin was killed. Like they hit the pause button because the plot called for it. Ridiculous.

It has been a very long time since I read the Iliad. IRRC, both sides thought that Patrocles was Achilles; Achilles was refusing to fight because Agammenon had insulted him. Patrocles donned Achilles armor and led his troops. They pushed the Trojans back.

At this point Hector confronts him. Now, understand that at the time, at least in literature, battles often descended to individual contests. Achilles was the Greek's greatest warrior. Hector was the Trojans Greatest warrior.

Both sides stopped because it appeared that their greatest Heroes were engaging in personal combat. It was not uncommon for troops to stop and witness those battles because they were very significant.

It is a literary trope of the period. It may not make sense to you, but literary styles often incorporate elements that may not make sense to modern sensibilities.

There are plenty of details in this movie that aren't faithful to the source material, the fact that this movie decided to keep this particular plot point despite the fact that it doesn't translate well to the big screen is a valid criticism. You can't have your cake and eat it too.

That doesn't even make sense. The film didn't follow every detail of the Iliad. Granted. But it did follow a lot of them. So your argument is if they don't follow all of them its a valid criticism that they followed one of them?

It's a valid criticism that they followed one that doesn't work in a live action movie. Just because something is faithful to the source material doesn't automatically mean it was the right choice. You need to adapt according to the entertainment medium.

I completely disagree. I thought it worked perfectly and illustrated the importance and prominence of one on one combat.

You may think differently and that is your right. My opinion is no better than yours.

I can live better with the lack of the gods, (though I would have preferred they show some presence) than this pivotal characteristic of the Trojan war.

But thats exactly what happened in real life so the movie had to show it that way

Real life? It was based on a fictional story
