He didn't want to do a spinoff and they talked him into it with the security of being able to return to the show if the spinoff didn't make it a season. When he came back and they used the "season and a half" loophole I felt so bad for him.

i wish they let the ropers come back to three's company when the ropers ended.they were hilarious in that one episode they returned for.the plot between the ropers and mr furley was funny.they could have found a way to write them back into the show.they really screwed him over.he had the right idea he didnt want to do the spinoff and felt it wouldnt work and he was right.they should have waited a few more seasons before they had them do a spinoff.
