Were they twins? I thought they went in the same homeroom at the beginning. They also both go to prom (although Roland could've just been going with Cassandra as she was also a senior).

When Roland and Cassandra are talking outside for the first time (Hillary Faye was inside singing) he tells her fell out of a tree when he was 9 and that's why he's in a wheelchair. She then asks him if that's why he's behind a year and he says yes. So he was at least a year older than Hillary Faye.
