Is there any real defense for Catholicism?

I don't mean Christianity in general, just Catholicism. I mean, the Pope himself sheltered rapists and pedophiles. I know there were the sexual abuse casses a few years back, which blew over. Now we find out that the church actively hid and protected these monsters from justice. How can someone, let alone the leader of the church, justify such dispicable people?

Just because the Pope and the higher-ups of the church are skeevy, backwards old men doesn't make the whole religion wrong.

I'm no fan of the Pope or the Vatican, but my grandparents are devout Catholics and they're the nicest, most generous and humble people I know. They're also really liberal.

There's more to Catholicism than just the Pope and the Vatican. A lot of the religion rests on belief in faith and works - the idea that doing good things and helping and giving to other humans is essential to being a good person and a practicing Catholic. Protestants do not generally believe in the importance of works in the same way that the Catholic faith does.

I'm not religious, and I don't believe in God, but I do like the Catholic attitude towards works - and many Catholic organizations do great work in fighting poverty and social injustice and promoting peace. I absolutely think that the Vatican and the Pope have some serious issues they need to be called out on, but nothing is more annoying to me than when people reduce the entire faith to the Pope and the Vatican.

What the pope and the vatican and all those old pedofiles and rapist did, does not define this religion.
In fact most Catholics i know are kind and caring and not at all as hypocritical as some Christians out there. I've never met a catholic person that would act like the Christians portrayed in this movie. Could also be because i'm not from America.

in fact you'll find that most Catholics are more open minded then other Christians. For example, no Catholic believes in creationism. Most catholic people will also never come talk to you on the street to convince you to become a Christian, or tell you that you are going to hell or some weird thing like that. You must also realize that Catholicism doesn't equal the Pope and Vatican. rapist and pedophiles are everywhere not just in the Catholic church. There is no justifying that these monsters were protected and most catholics are appalled at this discovery. You see, most Catholics also don't mindlessly follow their leaders.

Father Ted Crilly when talking about Catholicism: "It's so vague and no one really knows what it's all about".

The Catholic Church is, foremost, a business. A giant business and possibly the first multinational business. It has had business interests in virtually every country in the world and has owned some of them at times. Fortunately, that appears to be faltering as the youngsters of today are not buying the religious BS spewed by falsehood practitioners.

The lengths that the church went to hide and protect those deviates who assaulted young people provide a good indication what this business is all about. If you accept their excuses or continue to support it even after knowing what it has done you are as guilty as a pedophile priest.
