This movie incorrectly paints all Christians as...

(1) Homophobic
(2) Anti-Semitic
(3) Vandals
(4) Haters of pregnant teens
(5) Narcissistic
(6) Haters of the handicapped
(7) Liars
(8) Hallucinogenic
(9) Psychopathic

I understand what the producers were attempting to do with the whole "hypocrisy" angle, but at the same time, they sent a horrible message to the world. Mandy Moore's character was too over the top and she played a ridiculous, cartoonish "Christian Everyman."

I totally got a lot of the humor, but a lot of the other situations just fell flat. What they did here was support the stereotype of a small percent of Christians. By weight of comparison, it would be like the producers making a lengthy film about black people eating watermelon and fried chicken and having no positive traits whatsoever.

Sadly, we live in a time where it's "hip" to bash Christians and this movie is just one item in a long line of subtle attacks.

Get over it... like Christians NEVER do that to other groups of people.

Not everyone was like that. In the end when Hilary's friends found out that it was her who graffitied the school and tried to blame it on Mary and Cassandra they left and told her she was just a big fake, pretty much pointing out that she was a huge hypocrite.

And also, in the end Mary is still a Christian. Throughout the movie I believe she always held a tiny shred of her beliefs, but that they were just tested. When she saw the Christmas show with the virgin Mary she said she'd understand if she made it up, but then also admitted that she thought it was the truth.

And in the last scene she says "Looking at her, it's like life is too amazing to be this random and meaningless consequence of the universe. There had to be a God... or something out there." I know that doesn't exactly say she's still a Christian in the end, but she's still religious and I think that in the end she stays Christian (I'm Christian so of course I think that, but it's open to interpretation unless you trying to say she's athiest)

Also, Patrick, the pastor's son didn't display those traits. He continually tried to get with Mary even after she was ostracized from Hilary Faye and hanging with the supposed "wrong" crowd. If he was all those traits you listed than why would he go to prom with Mary even though he now knew she was pregnant. Not all the characters in the movie were Hilary Faye, in fact most of them weren't.

I agree. I think people tend to view only the negative parts of the movie and are forgetting that most of the characters were indeed Christians. They were good people. They were mainly making fun of Hilary Faye. The underlining theme of the movie was hypocrisy.

This movie is a COMEDY!!!!!! I went to Catholic school for 14 years, this film is a parody of everything that I grew up with and is hysterical!!! Look up comedy and parody in the dictionary.

reply

i wouldn't say parody. i found it very true to life. i used to go to church with moronic judgemental naive people like the ones in this movie. im so glad i realised how idiotic religion was before it was too late.

reply

I'm pretty sure the main theme
of the movie was to humorously
exaggerate this Christian-suburban subculture
in America.

reply

Some Christians are so overly-sensitive. This is not a Christian-bashing movie and it's not bigoted. If you want to experience real religious bigotry, try being an atheist, an agnostic, a Jew, a Muslim, a Buddhist...

I believe (pun intended) the moral lesson of this movie is to stay away from Jesus' unofficial fan club. They suck!

This house is clean -except for homeopt

it's called hilariously funny. i unwillingly go to a catholic school and in no way is it like this school (i dont think anyone actually believes in god here haha) but it's funny to hear the close-mindedness of some of the teachers, especially when it comes to the poor savages that will never know god and therefore never be saved and whatnot. sure this movie exagerates, but most movies do, its not saying all christians are like mandy moores character or anything. the sad thing is there are people like that and thats what the movies making fun of.
