'Young' Bo

Does anyone else agree with me that Valentina de Angelis should be credited as "Bo" and not "Young Bo"? I think "Young Bo" implies that Bo was a character in the movie and there were flashbacks or something. This girl did a fabulous job in this film and deserves credit for a full role not something that seems less when just looking at the credits.

I hope they didn't pay Amy Brenneman more than the minimum allowable for her portrayal of "Adult" Bo. Her presence was not necessary. Anyone could have played that role.

I enjoyed this film very much, but wish I could have witnessed the decision to sell the painting from Bo's room. What made them decide to sell this? Where did they get the notion it would bring in anywhere near $9000?

Valentina de Angelis is the star of this movie, taking nothing away from Joan Allen, Sam Elliott, J.K. Simmons and Jim True-Frost. As Mike4Movies says, the adult Bo is unnecessary.

reply

Of course, unless he had made a will specifically naming them, they would not have seen a cent. While we are on the subject, there is no way they could have prevented an autopsy, if valid grounds for performing an autopsy had been present.

reply

unexplained or unexpected death does not warrant an involuntary autopsy. there has to be some evidence (physical or motive) of foul play for a forced autopsy.

reply

As an ER physician, I feel that I have some authority in disagreeing with the post re involuntary autopsy. When an 85 year old dies, no autopsy is needed unless there is evidence of wrong doing. When a 45 year old dies unexpectedly, Michigan mandates an autopsy (even if the decedant is a nameless "John Doe"). Should a 45 year old Cancer patient expire, then no autopsy is mandated, b/c the cause of death is clear.

I know this b/c I recall the first patient that died under my care. Despite having followed all accepted protocols, when I heard that the coroner was going to do an autopsy, I worried that it would show some negligence on my part. After the autopsy, the coroner made it a point to phone me saying that the 45 year old woman had advanced heart disease, that I was in the clear, and that we ALWAYS AUTOPSY FOLKS UNDER 75 YEARS OLD, if the cause of death is not clearly and unmistakedly obvious. A 40 year old found dead in the desert would ALWAYS have the death investigated.

It bugs me when lay people promote opinion as fact. But when the post is all in lower case letters, it screams "Amateur", or lazy.

reply

In addition to the medical reasons cited by Dr. Tom, an unattended death always legally requires an autopsy.

Amy Brenneman is a piece of s hit, and her greatest claim to fame is showing her ass and sides of her tits in "NYPD Blue." It's pathetic that Brenneman gets top billing in this movie. Thankfully, though, the useless twit gets ZERO mention on the DVD cover. This was Sam Elliott's movie. He stole the show.

reply

I agree, she's an overrated actress, greatly overrated, the young girl playing Bo owned this movie and should get top billing IMHO. As far as casting Amy as "older Bo" it was such a horrible choice as she looks and has none of the vibe of older Bo I subtracted a couple stars from my rating. Worst. Casting. EVAR!

reply

Have to disagree here. Sam Elliott's character was inert except for the occasional dry weeping. Valentina de Angelis was the star--she reminds me of the little one that played Scout in _To Kill a Mockingbird_. She has the kind of intensity/ presence rarely found in actors her age.

Why the Brenneman tit-rage, jarth-2? What the heck do you care where her name is listed?

reply

This is true now, but the story took place back in 1974 and he died in 1982. I don't know how to get the New Mexico records, but it might not have been required back then. The setting might have pre-dated the laws about autopsy especially since there is sooooooo much more we can learn now from autopsys that we couldn't back then. (Not that it was the dark ages but modern medicine is costantly changing)
It didn'y seem to me that the family had anything to do with his death. They seemed to live together for 8 years as a psuedo family with the what is mine is ours mentalitly and would not have a need to kill him and would want to respect his death. She did come from a family that believed in spirits and old medicines.

If I understood correctly, they sold the painting the in the same year that the movie set and he didn't die until 8 years later. If this is the case, then he could simply have given them the money.

reply

i was unclear about that because the narration goes something like, "the painting sold for $115000. when we sold it the summer my father was not so depressed, we got $9000 for the painting."... which they used to pay for the boat and the tax penalties and braces. but i don't understand the duplicate sellings and the different price amounts. did anyone understand that part more clearly?

reply

I'm not certain of this but it looks like near the end of the movie we see that the adult Bo has the painting in her apartment. I had the feeling that they sold it initially to pay for the boat, etc. and then many years later Bo was actually able to buy it back for herself at a much higher price.

reply

Adult Bo is contemplating the painting while in the gallery.

reply

paintings are often sold and resold, and as he became a more recognized artist..the worth of the painting increased, and after his death, it would have skyrocketed.

They sold the painting for the first time for 9,000...and after that it changed hands more time, and at the "present" moment, had just sold for 115,000.

reply

No, I don't agree, since "Bo" as an adult narrated the film. It made sense to me. Amy was the voice of the entire movie. It was just a credit, jeez...

reply

I was also puzzled about their choice to sell the paintings. And yes Bo was clearly the lead and it was a bit weird how she was called Young Bo when she could have just been Bo and there could have been Adult Bo too.

reply

I liked this film very much, but I could have done without either Bo. The girl constantly tried my patience with her precociousness, and the adult provided narration when it wasn't necessary.

As for the credit, "Young Bo" works for me, because that's who she played. I wish I could share your enthusiasm for Valentina de Angelis, but she grated on my nerves here – and I'm normally very tolerant of child actors.

As to "young Bo" vs "grown up Bo" I listened to most of the director's commentary. The movie is based on a stage play and the author was sitting with him during the commentary. While most of the dialogue came stright from the play parts of the play were cut out. A major part belonged to "adult Bo" which ended up on the cutting room floor to shorten the running time of the movie.

They were mindful that due to the lack of "action" many in the audience would get bored. So they stuck to the New Mexico scenes which had the added value of the landscape backdrop.

I might add that in Dallas County, Texas, they did not have a medical coronor's office for a long time. Deaths were pronounced by the Justice of the Peace for that area. Dallas had several and one had only a high school diploma. There was also no paramedics. Funeral Homes operated ambulances and would bid on a contract from the county who wanted the cheapest bid they could get. Funerals homes did this because they would offer to handle all the details like funerals and death certificates while the family was still in shock at the sudden death.

One Justice of the Peace was well known for calling any death without a gaping wound or blood a heart attack. In one case the Dallas police said he came to the scene stood in the door and said a man lying on his back in the living room had died of a heart attack. When they turned him over he had a knife sticking in his back. These J.P.'s usually would listen to the funeral directors as to cause of death outside a hospital or nursing home because they had no background.

New Mexico is pretty rural and laid back. I remember one sheriff drove a school bus to make ends meet. He said by the time he got to the scene any robbers or thieves were long gone. Some counties even shared a district attorney because they couldn't afford a full time D.A.
