Why did they call Noah Duke in the beginning?

Any legitimate reason other than to hide his identity?

I thought at first that maybe their names weren't really Noah and Allie, that they were simply changed for the story, but Allie still introduced herself as Allie.

Could you please edit the title of the thread? It's a spoiler, after all.

I saw the movie on DVD and one of the deleted scenes explains this: NOAH says that if ALLIE's told immediately who she is and who he is, then she becomes afraid. He also says that's the reason why their kids have to pretend like they've just met her everytime they visit.

It bothered me, because what matters is the finished movie. It comes off as a cheap way to mislead the audience.

Just a cheap writing trick. One of many signs about how bad the script was and how overrated this movie is.

I think it's because since the older Allie has Alzheimer's he didn't want to tell her his real name on his own, he wanted her to figure it out after he finished reading the book.
