Why is it called 'The Clearing'

I just watched the Clearing today and i don't quite understand the name. Does any one know what they chose the name 'The Clearing'? By the way, i found the film to be fantastic. Even though many critics found it slow, i personally thought it to be a refreshing film during the blockbuster season. It had great performances with some very good dialogue spoken between Redford and Dafoe in the forest. But anyway, does anyone know about the name.

I think it's a double meaning. The Clearing as in the process of making everything clear. It becomes clear to redford that he loves his wife and that his affair was a mistake. It becomes clear to Defoe's character that even if he get's away with the money, it's not going to solve his core character. It becomes more clear to his wife the real relationship between her and redford.

It's also because because Defoe shot Redford in "the clearing" in the woods. But's it's a symbolic as well as literal. They are all in the woods but they all reach the clearing in a figurative sense.

Does that work for you?
