reply

well...erm.you came here looking for what?
1.a debate to prove to you in the end that you are wrong
2.just the classic one-liner "you're an idiot"
choose.i can do either one

reply

tell me what was good about this movie...i dont want to hear performances, because thats a *beep* answer...tell me what about this movie should make someone like it.

do that and you can call me an idiot.

i dont get on the boards and diss many movies, but this one was an hour and a half wasted.

reply

well i cannot tell you why should someone like the movie.to each his own.this movie isn't a great one but it's a decent way to spend an hour and a half. have in mind though that this is not a movie about a kidnapping.it's a study of characters, that under a frightening experience, get in touch with their true emotions and do some order in their lives and on the other hand it's about the never ending battle between social classes.i know it may sound corny but it was a pretty original aproach because while most movies focus on the action part of the kidnapping this one focused on dialogue and feelings.granted, about 10-15 minutes in the middle of the movie feel like an hour and go on very slowly but like i said, it wasn't a great movie, just an ok way to spend an hour and a half.
6.1 is a good rating for it.
there you go.and not a single word about the performances.

The movie was the perfect picture of anti-climatic. For much of the film I was on my seat's edge. I was guessing that the time difference was there, but my wife kept telling me she wasn't so sure. She had this idea that the killers were somehow faking some of the things that were being sent. In any event, she was on her seat's edge. Both of us sitting there on the edge of our theater seating (living room) while the music dripped of suspense. Then... nothing. The only release was what you thought all along. He was going to die and it was a sham conjured up by one captor. Wow. Hehe. That's anti-climatic folks. No climax of emotions as something happens to bring light to the suspense. What's the mystery when every indication was given as to the truth.

The acting was stellar but you can watch a multitude of other films to discover all three of these actors are good.

reply

well, i can understand your upset.the thing about this movie is that it depends a lot on what you're expecting when you go to see it.and that's it's biggest problem.

reply

I was expecting this movie to be an "edge of your seat thriller," but instead, it was slow, boring, and it didn't really make any sense. And where was the emotion in the characters, especially the wife? I was very disappointed with this movie, and I agree that it was a waste of time.

reply

For a character study movie, they sure picked boring characters. Really, they were trite and predictable. Rich guy gets kidnapped by guy down on his luck. Rich wife discovers rich husband was still having a relationship with his former mistress / secretary. Big surprise, and that sub-plot went nowhere. I'm failing to see the character study in the movie. We never learn anyone's motivations or see any character growth.

reply

yep. this movie sucked! plain and simple..

ARG! Could Robert Redford have been any stupider? Ditto for Helen Mirren?

1. I knew the SECOND she's about to drop off the money but wants proof her husband's alive and hear's "Eileen" then hurriedly leaves the bag, that it's the same recording of his voice she was sent earlier. Was there anyone else watching the movie that didn't realize that? That doesn't click at all for her apparently. Not even coupled with the report that the blood taken could have been from her husband dead not alive. Still no doubts though from the one word she heard? Interesting.

2. OK, you've just choked your kidnapper into submission (even got the gun away from him). Hmmm...shouldn't your next move be to RETRIEVE THE GUN, not turn your back to the guy, and leave the weapon where it was? Maybe make sure he's dead, possibly get the gun and shoot him? Geez, hasn't this guy seen any horror movies? He couldn't even turn TOWARDS the bad guy at least? Nope!

*Two dumb people...they deserved their fate.

Aside from my anger over the dumbness of the characters, the movie made no sense. There still wasn't any real explanation for Willem's plan. Nor did it make sense (as someone else pointed out) for him to demand a ransom. There was no point! He killed the guy the night he kidnapped him; he might as well have just killed him, then went home...not drag everything out for his family over weeks. Seeing as how he never intended to actually use the money he demanded, but wanted to get caught. The whole conceit of him going to great lenghts to prove Robert Redford was still alive? Also pointless. Why not just kill the guy, get on with your life? All those stupid games. If he wanted to get caught so bad, he could have just turned himself in that day. NO...weeks of pointless crap.

*This movie was a HUGE waste of time...glad I just rented it.

Apparently people out there actually enjoyed this movie, and you know what, good for you. Everyone's entitled to their opinion (as I just vented mine). I was seriously dumbfounded about the retarded characters, actions, and the entire plot. But if you liked it...fine. I'm glad you feel you didn't waste your time or money like I do. I'm glad for you. I however, thought it sucked BIG TIME. It just left me feeling empty. Not surprised or content or full of thought provoking ideas or wanting more or anything...just empty. Uggg.

Well, I think Helen was acting more out of deperation than anything else, her husband was gone and she wanted him back, she loved him. too many people get caught up in the way Hollywood portrays people in a given situation instead of the way real people reat to it. Most people do not have loved ones taken from them and most people do not strangle the life out of other people and certainly do not shoot them to death....just my .02

i know you all wanted to see a typical Hollywood flick, but since most kidnappings end in the death of the mark and the perps getting caught anyway, I'm glad that this movie went in the direction it did...I just didn't care for the very end...blech, lol

but that's just my opinion, I could be wrong =)

I've got to agree with you there, but I still enjoyed the film. Admittedly it wasn't what I expected from reading the blurb on the DVD cover, but I wasn't disappointed by it.

There's an art to making love. And you don't even have a paintbrush.

reply

yeah, pretty much a waste of time re: the so called plot! acting was great from mirren, redford, defoe. don't bother seeing it. seriously

reply

Actually, I thought it was a fairly good movie. It wasn't the same old tired attempt at kidnapping/suspense; it was really more about how he lived his life before the kidnapping, and the issues in their marriage as well as their family.

"Sex is so overrated. Especially the way I do it." Do YOU know where this quote came from??

reply

I agree with those who think this movie was awful.

The only decent scene was the attempted escape/fight scene and even that had it's flaws; Redford assumes Dafoe is dead as soon as he stops moving and doesn't even attempt to get the gun or watch the corpse to see if it starts moving or give it an extra whack on the head? For a supposedly intelligent guy, that was pretty dumb.

Other than the above scene, this was extremely boring. The only reason I watched the whole thing was to see how Redford escapes and/or the criminals are deceived. Unfortunately the ending was just as boring and pointless as the rest of the movie.

reply

I come across this flicking the stations. I stop. Then, I continue flicking because they are always sitting in some field talking and it seems boring. I gottta try to watch from the beginning I suppose.

reply

No trust me you don't gotta watch it from the beginning, the kidnapping wasn't compelling and this film was basically 2 hours of nothing. The only twist is the fact that there was no expected twist and nothing got resolved.

reply

I agree. Its a silly movie with a plain and boring argument; actually, it can be resumed in a 5 minute short, and even then would still be boring.

The hope of an unexistent twist is the only reason I watched it till the end, what a waste of time.
