This film is criminally underrated...

An average of about 6/10? I just don't understand what's to dislike about this film - the story, the acting, the direction - all superb. The only 'flaw' that some people might see in it is that its slow, yet something mind-numbingly boring like Lost In Translation gets 7.9! This film deserved an 8.0 at the least.

For some reason I thought the wife was in on the kidnapping. I would have never guessed that outcome.

You might consider that this film is less about what actually took place in the story, but is an exploration of what is going on in the minds of the principal characters. In that manner, this is an absolutely fascinating work executed with excellence.

Loved this movie. Not your usual kidnap flick - which makes it so absorving.

Are you joking!? I hope so. I just watched this movie and could not believe Robert Redford, Helen Mirren and Willem Dafoe could be in a movie this bad. No character development especially for the daughter and son. Ooh watch me be upset, run really, really fast and breakdown and cry. This movie looks like it was one of those movies that was shot in Canada, pretending to be a nondescript U.S. city with the extra added bonus of two true Canadians Craven & Crewson playing two underdeveloped characters. Sorry guys, I AM Canadian, Bob & Doug showed more emotion when the mouse got stuck in their beer, eh!
The Last Castle was Oscar material compared to this. I'll wait.....

You obviously are severely lacking in intelligence AND taste.

It proceeded exactly as you'd expect that a kidnap story would, apart from the fact that it wasn't action-orientated in the traditional way. Normally I wouldn't have a problem with this, but what was unfortunate is that the dialogue is in every way supremely unenlightening, as well! All in all, it made for a poor show when you couldn't even rely on stimulating exchanges to spark your interest...

I was so looking forward to this movie and it was a major letdown. It wasn't bad for the lone reason of the incredible talent of Dafoe, Redford and Mirren, but as others have said, there was just no character development to make you understand what drove the characters or actually feel invested in anybody in the film. It felt like a good hour was missing from the film. The look at what the family was doing during the kidnapping came off especially flat. It was all very well done but totally uninvolving.

This movie reminds me too much of "Proof of Life" with Russell Crowe.

Actually He didn't 'just die'

If you notice, About two seasons go past.

They clearly show a winter, then a thaw.

So before Arnold got caught quite a long time went by.

This movie did not mark the flow of time and I guess it's just not clear.

Seems like everyone missed the part where at least 3 months go from Death to capture.

There were two distinct time lines going on. One is over in a matter of hours, while the other one takes months to resolve. It might not be apparent immediately, but easy to see as the movie develops. Some films are so mixed up it is impossible to determine time, but this one was fairly easy. Maybe not perfect with the pacing, but a very good movie.

I feel gutted that this film used up an hour and a half of my life. I couldn't have cared less for any of the characters. I felt nothing towards them as someone else quite rightly pointed out, there was no character development.

I found it laugh-out-loud ridiculous that a successful business man's mobile phone would take THAT LONG to ring when he has a wife, two kids and the FBI trying to find him (and equally irritating is the use of the nokia ring tone).

I am fully prepared to amdit that sometimes a subtle yet clever film's meaning is lost on me but this was the most laughable piece of film making I have ever had the misfortune to come across.

I love Willem Dafoe and cannot believe he starred in this reeking pile of dog turd.

It didnt take long time to ring. At the time his wife did not know he was kidnapped. FBI wasn not looking for him. She was just annoyed that he didnt show up in time for dinner and called him. Everything we see what happens with Redford, happened in one day during few hours. Everything we see what happens with Mirren takes several days and months in the end. There are two timelines.

What is wrong with basic Nokia ringtone ? He was businessman, not some teenage moron who spends half of his days looking for "cool" ringtones to download . Cellphone was not a toy for him.
