what was the purpose of him?
I'm 15 and I remember back in 2005 (when I was 11 (my birthday hadnt came) ), commercials aired nonstop saying "If this man's going to protect **Forgotten number** cheerleaders, he's gonna need some backup" and Cedric's face appears and he starts to dance in the church. He only had 3 scenes. all of them were quick and straight and to the point. he was just a *beep*-ing cameo. NOT A MAIN ROLE.
It was a cameo but techinically he did help Tommy Lee Jones' character. Sometimes movies do that. I remember when they did it with Ving Rhames & Kurt Russell in Dark Blue. They made it seem like they would have this badass confrontation but they didn't. Still a good film though. I enjoyed both.

Cedric was in jail and had a past relationship with the Tommy Lee Jones character and the Bad guy who was on trial and killing witnesses.
I'm assuming the texas ranger put Cedric's character in jail.
