Looks like the forgot to finish it...

Seriously, I'm sick of people who don't know how to write getting their work made into feature films while good writers get left in the dust. This movie had a lot of potential, but this movie followed the growing trend of not properly finishing the story.

Seriously, they did the buildup, backstory, and climax, yet forgot the most crucial step of storytelling: resolution. Yay, we know Cheri got what she deserved. But what happened to Duffy and Buzzy? What was Jack's fate? What happened with Cheri's parents? Seriously, these people need to take basic courses in storytelling.

Everything was great until they forgot to give it an ending.

reply

freaky how the resolution isn't about what happens to everyone but actually why everything happened. (Karma)

yup, it can get a little confusing for some people when a movie doesn't follow the typical Hollywood format.

Thank you, Mr. Wall. In case you can't decipher Mr. Wall's sarcasm, basically what he is saying is this:

++ Spoiler ++

This movie, along with all movies (Well, I haven't seen all movies, so I'll say "a lot of movies"), had a beginning, middle, and end. The beginning was the body being dropped on Jack's car. The middle was everything between the beginning and end. The end was the Cheri's phone call with Jack to the closing shot and credits. Just because the ending is ultra-short does not mean there is none. We are not meant to know what happened to all the characters after 11:14 PM. The plot of the movie was the events in Middleton at 11:14, not the characters involved in the events. If the filmmakers decided to show us what happened to everybody it would have added at least another hour to the movie. To do it well, there would be two more hours of "resolution."

++ End Spoiler ++

The movie was just great as is.

It seems like lately you've been interested in more well-written drama like "days of our lives" and "as the world turns". At least each episode of soap-operas end with a clear resolution for all chararcters!

Like the others, I'm going to have to disagree with you. I think the movie's ending was just right, but it was kind of abrupt.

Things aren't always wrapped up in a nice pretty package for you. Just look at The Sopranos.

If you are Jesus Christ and are 100% proud of it, copy this and make it your signature!

If you think about it, everything that would happen to the characters after 11:14 (except what was shown) wouldn't really be that interesting. Duffy and the other guy got away, Swayze probably just went home to find that his daughter is dead, the teenagers went to the hospital and just had to explain everything that happened to the cops, and the dude at the beginning went to jail. I think the ending was spot on.

well, you are right about that it wouldn't be interesting do find out what happned to all of the charachters. It wouldn't contribute to the mood build up. This ending was just fine.. a bit more than fine i my opinion.

But If I had to guess I'd say:

the drunk guy:

he'll get arrested for DUI, operating the car without license, (but not for the guy on the hood since that's obviasly an acident, he might however get arrested for hiding the body, escaping from the police) So he'll be gone' for some time..

Swayze:

Probably went back to get his car from the bridge, if he didn't run in to problems with the police, he'll be home again soon to find out he's daughter died.

Teenage guys:

the guy with the missing dick probably bled to death since there were 15(?) miles to the hospital. the guys was wanted by the police, and the hospitals was probably announced.
The driver probably got some jail time, jail, but his friend was probably not convicted

Duffy and Swank:

Probably got away, but was again capured by the cops a couple of hours7 days later. I don't think they'd coviced Swank, since she can blame it all on that he threatned her and shot her, but duffy got jail for armed robbary.

did i miss anyone? anyway I apologies for spelling errors and *beep* im non-english

reply

In case of the drunk guy you forget that he has to explain how most of the body's head went missing in the car crash... He won't get out of this so easily.

JP and Friction. . .

Spoliers btw. . .

u guys are forgetting that Swayze's Character doesn't go back to the honda or anything, he runs to the ambulance vehicle and asks what happened to his daughter. . .that's the end of his story. . .

and if any story HAD to end with anything appropriate, i'd say it would have to be henry thomas' story because although his story is told first, it's techinically last because the police guy looses duffy and buzzy, therefore chasing henry thomas and FINALLY making his one arrest all night lol. . .that cop was hilarious. . .

but this is where HIS whole story most likely happens at the same time as patrick swayze's story afterward because they both took about the same length. . .AFTER 11:14

If I had to guess, there's no way this mess gets untangled by the cops

Drunk Guy : Convicted for vehicular manslaughter. As a repeat DUI, he's in the slammer for awhile

Teenage guys: dick probably reattached with only limited success. All are arrested. Driver gets charged with manslaughter (he may plead this down), the kid who retreived the dick gets charged with a slew of crimes including being an accessory. Third kid is subjected to various charges and humiliation.

Buzzy and Duffy: get caught eventually and go to jail. Buzzy makes a deal of testimony for a light sentence.

++(WARNING: Possible spoilers)++

One way to look at the resolution is that the WHOLE film is the resolution. You could view it as equivalent to the cops getting each person to tell their side of the story; with the final part being the pieced together actions of Cheri including all the bits where she is seen, her phone records etc.

The story is never about the long term futures of these characters and their fates; all it is about is the events of that one night and what happened when. Its a jigsaw puzzle and the resolution is the final part which pulls everything together and explains what exactly happened at 11:14.

If they had done a "what happened next" to wrap it all up, it would have jarred with the entirety of the rest of the film. This film is perfect as it is, and the characters futures are not the focus nor actually relevant to the story. All that matters is what happened at 11:14.
