Good...but not great

In my opinion, this movie was very good as far as the acting ~ the cast was superb, especially the ladies: McTeer, Fricker and Dukakis.
Most of the characters were developed ok, or as well as necessary, except 'William'. I do think that 'William' seemed rather crazy at the start, then seemed to get 'normal' as the movie progressed. Whether this was because he was out from under his mother's control? Who knows? But it happens too quickly, too abrupt, in the timing of this movie.
The humid conditions and the lack of anyone able to wash and groom themselves was pretty authentic. Very 'gritty' this one! {I ran and showered right after!}
Storyline was very good, although I was left with questions as to what happened exactly, and what happens at the end. I think a good explanation is in the comment made earlier by 'justpassingtime' ~ but I still wonder: was that the first time McTeer, as the intended, was intimate with her surveyor beau, or ...?
If I was directing, I would have had more 'jungle stuff' in it somewhere ~ that part could have enhanced it a bit with more action between the post people and the natives, perhaps, or finding that minister somewhere later?.
Overall rating: I think it's too high...I mean, it's on the list of IMDb's 250!
And that's how I heard about it. But Top 250? I don't think so! I'd give it a 5.5 of 10.
