This is my interpretation of the movie

I think that Wendy and Karens grandfather used to moleste them when they were children and this is what led to Wendys death. Karen has all these repressed memories and guilt that it starts to manifest into her hallucinations. She has no perception of reality. Pierce represents Karens grandfather, the good and the evil, watch the scene with him pushing Wendy on the swing, its almost like she was acting like a child. I think that is why Pierce kept saying he wouldnt let Karen fall, a grandfather should protect you not hurt you. I think the ending is pretty silly though. When Karen leaves the house with her boyfriend she is happy because she has finally layed everything to rest, if I was hallusinating like she was I wouldnt be so happy, I would be checking myself into a hospital for a very long rest. Please reply and let me know if anyone agrees with my interpretation of this movie.

I totally agree. I kept saying to my Mom that if i started having dreams and stuff like that i would be checking into a Hospital Ward for help. I also thought it was weird at the end how she could be happy about her sister's death. She seemed to smile at the end.

I think she smiled b/c she "saw" her sister as a youngster, and Wendy was happy and waving goodbye to Karen. So they had both "laid to rest" their memories.

that's what I got out of the movie and the ending

Spoiler ahead.

I read all the bad reviews on the movie and started with the right premise: everything I see about Pierce and Wendy can be assumed to be just a figment of Karen's imagination, or re-living of what happened seventeen years ago.

The only real people in there are Karen's boyfriend and the policeman. There is no benign Pierce nor malign Pierce; BOTH are a figment of her imagination (although the movie tries to confuse by presenting an existing benign Pierce and an imagined malignant Pierce through most of the movie).

After that, the whole movie makes perfect sense. Even the ending. The final scene (of young Wendy and Karen sleeping in room) seem to suggest that yes, their grandfather (or someone, caretaker?) did rape one or both of them when they were younger and possibly Karen had blocked off that memory.

It's not a bad movie; just grossly misunderstood. Kinda like assuming The Others (with Nicole Kidman) is about other ghosts in the house when... oops, did I give away two spoilers? ;-)

I agree with deanna and wildcat. When Karen and her boyfriend first got to the house, her boyfriend picked up a picture and asked if this was her grandfather. I noticed the way she said that it was and the look on her face that suggested that she didn't want to talk about him. I was not sure about Pierce, but I thought that he had something to do with Wendy's death. Now that I think about it, it could have been the grandfather. I really enjoyed this movie and it did make a lot of since even the smile at the end.

pretty much what i thought of the movie too. actaully thought it was a pretty good movie. even without the hotties and tom Sizemore it woudl still have been good. love when the ending leaves it so wide open to let you think whatever you want.

guess they were both molested, i think they hinted at that when karen didnt want to marry her boyfriend
