'Spoilers': ending

Did somebody else find it extremely sad that the "protagonist" never found his living fossils?
I found that very moving, especially because they could find so many of those holes the worms live in but no animals. And one of the last words the scientist says is that he probably will never see any with his own eyes.

I'm normally not easily moved by cheesy dramas etc. but the ending of this movie was pretty heavy.
