Why is the movie dubbed in Finnish?

I wonder why all the actors and actresses, even the ones that played Finns, spoke Swedish? Especially I was bothered about the fact that in the parts where the characters spoke Finnish the talk was actually dubbed. Why is that? Why didn't they speak Finnish from the beginning? At least some of the actresses are Finnish speaking.

Weird. When I saw it, half of them spoke Finnish.

Wait! Does this also mean putting out doesn't get you love?

I don't quite understand what you mean either.
The film is set to Sweden, hence some of the actors (even Finnish) spoke Swedish at times. Esp when interacting with Swedes. Sometimes they spoke Finnish with eachothers.

The local language in northern Sweden, where the story takes place is a language called Meänkieli (ISO 639-3 fit), which is closely related to present-day modern Finnish, but not completely comprehensible for finnish speakers. Wikipedia expains: "Meänkieli is chiefly distinguished from standard Finnish by a lack of influence from modern 19th and 20th century developments in that language. Meänkieli also contains many loanwords from Swedish pertaining to daily life."

The swedish policy of the time was to root out all local minority languages (finnish dialects, all the Sami languages and roma) by school education. This was quite well accomplished to the degree that most families there now use Swedish at home instead of their own languages.

The tides started turning in the late 1970-s and early 1980-s and minority languages were not officially surpressed any more. Meänkieli is now much more in use and is getting a lot of influence from modern Finnish also due to the proximity of the Finnish border and increased interaction. For example the biggest Ikea store in northern Scandinavia was built exactly on the border between Finland (Tornio) and Sweden (Haparanda) and has inspired a big commercial district around it on both sides of the border.
