Rape?

I tried to read the book, but when I realized it was another novel about a woman falling in love with her rapist, I quickly put it down. I also remember the rape scene being very graphic in the novel. Did the change the story-line for the movie to omit the rape scene and the love-for-the-rapist cliche? I am just wondering if I should watch it or not. I have heard so many good things about it, but I just don't think I could sit through a movie about a woman falling for her rapist. It's just he most preposterous idea, in my opinion. In addition, I am also not a fan of violence against women in films, (Monster, starring Charlize Theron, traumatized me thoroughly.) Should I see this film?

I'll tell you in another life, when we are both cats.

The rape scene is in. And it doesn't come over as a cliche in the movie.
I have heard so many good things about it...
With good reason.
. . . but I just don't think I could sit through a movie about a woman falling for her rapist.
Then you had better NOT watch it.

film: 9/10
Penelope Cruz's performance: 10/10 (as good an acting job as one is likely to see and then some)
