Wow

I had the pleasure of downloading this after reading the short story. What a piece of crap...
The short story was pretty good, however. It's not the best one in Night Shift, but decent nonetheless. For this reason I didn't care how crappy the film was, because it wasn't one of those Stephen King stories that sticks in enough to care if a film adaptation will do justice or not. Film adaptations of any Stephen King tend to be horrible for the most part, but the films I do suggest are Cujo, Salem's Lot (both versions were good), Maximum Overdrive (very good version of Night Shift's 'Trucks', written and directed by Stephen King himself), Silver Bullet (however completely different from Cycle of the Werewolf). The thing about Stephen King's works is that they are effective only when read, not viewed, so don't depend on films based on his works, they do no justice.
Cujo is still the scariest movie I've ever seen though.

Well, filmed adaptations of King's work are definetly largley bad, but frankly I'd put Maximum Overdrive and Silver Bullet very comfortably and easily into the "bad" list. As a matter of fact, Maximum Overdrive might lead my personal list.

The best Stephen King adaptations come from A-list directors and A-list actors. This has been proven time and time again. Shawshank, Green Mile, Kubrick's Shining, Dead Zone, Carrie, Misery are just a list of the best of the Stephen King movie adaptations produced. The best of the t.v. adaptations is The Stand, with Storm of the Century taking second place (although it's not an adaptation per-se).

I'm pretty well convinced that King has a level of contempt for the filmed medium. Why else would the guy insist on b-level production talent and acting to take control of his adaptations, and be perfectly satisfied with the results? This guy has produced some of the most imaginative and scary literature of the latter half of the twentieth century and merrily went along personally assisting with junk films.
