It was a joke indeed, i think, kind of dark humour!
There is some comedy in the film, like the insanely happy jingle during the poker deaths and the over the top ending, with the lead character shooting the car radio.
It's one of Argento's best work from the last decade i think, a tight little thriler with some nice set-pieces and fine acting from the leads.
