This movie is not unrealistic, I'm in a simmilar situation, and my family (though not italian) has the same closeness and same gossiping going on. The homophobic elements in it are real, it's a lot harder to chose between the one you love and the family you really really love despite them being homophobic, and the fear of losing one drives you insane. What made Nino a coward wasnt that he was closeted, what made him weak was that he didn't have the gut to stand up and at least defend that homosexuality isn't what those people say it was.
I actually liked this movie a lot, and though Nino's life ended up the way it did, didn't make me feel so bad, because at the end (though lame and corny) Angelo's family accepted he was gay and were willing to change a little bit for his sake. I understand that doesn't mean much to you, but to me that is something nice as I doubt my family will ever show me that courtesy.
And you keep saying ''no self respecting gay man'' and reminds gay men that homophobia..'' lesbians, bisexuals, transgendered, transsexual people, we're all in the same boat here when it comes to this, and that feeling of having to choose between yourself and those you love is something most people feel related to.
I find this movie realistic with a little corniness throws through it.. and it did make me feel better.
Joker:They don't make straitjackets like they used to. I should know.
